No. 16 Field Hockey Falls to SMCM in Season Opener

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 16 Washington and Lee University field hockey team opened up the 2023 season with a 2-1 loss to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Friday night.

The Generals (0-1) scored first, a Betty Boatwright tally in the first stanza, but the Seahawks (1-0) responded with two goals in the fourth quarter to earn the non-conference win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore Betty Boatwright put the Blue and White on the board at the 10:58 mark. Junior Maddy Duggleby sent a ball in to Boatwright from the top of the scoring circle. Boatwright received the pass on the right side of the goal post, split two defenders and slipped her shot past the goalkeeper.
  • W&L held SMCM scoreless for the next 36 minutes and fended off three penalty corner sets in the third quarter.
  • The Seahawks were awarded a penalty corner at the 46:40 mark. Brenna Ziegler inserted the corner from the left side Audrey Dickens redirected a pass inside and Ziegler was able to tap the ball into the far post.
  • Chaos ensued inside the critical scoring area after a 55:22 penalty corner was awarded. In the post-corner scrum, Abby Long made the initial stop, a shot from Anna Eaton. While Long was trying to recover positioning, Briana Allen found the ball off the rebound and scored the game-winner for the visitors.
