Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 2 Hopkins Downs Field Hockey 2-0 in Winchester

WINCHESTER, Va. - The No. 16 Washington and Lee University field hockey team fell to No. 2 Johns Hopkins University 2-0 in a neutral site match on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (1-0) put a tally on the board in the first and second quarter to take down the Generals (0-2). W&L had solid scoring opportunities in the second half including a shot that found the back of the goal but was called off.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Johns Hopkins scored the initial goal off a penalty corner at the 3:59 mark in the game. A pass inside was tipped up by Mikayla Schoff in front of the goal. Siena Urbanski, who inserted the corner, was in prime positioning on the back post. Urbanski tapped the redirect past the Generals' last line of defense for the first tally.
  • In the second quarter, Schoff again dished out an assist to Liz Falterer at the 15:42 mark to open up the second quarter.
  • The Generals' defense held strong for the next 44 minutes. Senior keeper Abby Long saw four more shots and made one stop in the second quarter.
  • Julia McDonald played all 30 minutes of the second half and made two stops on six shots.
  • The Generals collected themselves at half time and blasted nine shots, four of which were on goal, in the final half.
  • Despite really strong efforts in the half, the Blue and White score column remained at zero after a would-have-been-goal was called off due to a high ball at the deflection.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • JHU edged W&L in shots 14-12 and shots on goal 5-4.
  • First-year Margaret Cover put five shots on the board with three of those recorded on frame.
  • Hopkins goalie Alexis Loder made four saves.
