CARLISLE, Pa. — The No. 23 Washington and Lee University field hockey team picked up its first win of the 2026 season in upset fashion Saturday afternoon, taking down No. 9 Dickinson College, 2-1, at the Biddle Field Complex.
The Generals (1-1) remained perfect in the all-time series against the Red Devils, improving to 6-0 against Dickinson. Saturday marked the first meeting between the programs since 2023, when Washington and Lee also made the trip to Carlisle.
After controlling much of the opening half, W&L broke through in the closing minutes of the second quarter on the first collegiate goal from
Anna Treese. Dickinson (0-2) leveled the contest on a third-quarter penalty stroke before
Madeline Lancione delivered the game-winner off an assist from
Zoe Dolfis with 10:37 remaining.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Washington and Lee controlled the opening quarter, taking four unanswered shots. Margaret Cover and Britty Page each put attempts on cage, while the Generals' defense did not allow a Dickinson shot during the period.
- The Generals continued to hold Dickinson without a shot in the second quarter and earned a pair of penalty corners. With less than two minutes remaining before halftime, Cecilia Hartford forced a save from Red Devils' goalkeeper Arden Cook before Treese found the cage one second later at the 28:03 mark to send W&L into the break with a 1-0 lead.
- DC generated its first shot of the afternoon at 36:15 and followed with three consecutive shots on goal. Helenka Chodakiewicz stopped all three attempts before the Red Devils were awarded a penalty stroke at 37:02. Nicole Uebele converted the opportunity to even the score at 1-1.
- W&L regained the momentum in the fourth quarter, earning penalty corners at 45:22 and 48:05 before Lancione put the Generals back in front at the 49:23 mark. Dolfis provided the assist on the eventual game-winning tally.
- The Generals did not allow a shot on goal over the final 22:58. The home team generated two attempts during the fourth quarter, but one went wide and the other was blocked as W&L closed out the nationally ranked victory.
