WASHINGTON, D.C. — The No. 21 Washington and Lee University field hockey team scored three times in the second quarter and held Catholic University to two shots en route to a 4-0 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.
The Generals (2-1) earned their second consecutive road victory following last week's 2-1 upset of then-No. 9 Dickinson. W&L controlled the offensive tempo against the unranked Cardinals (1-3), finishing with a 20-2 advantage in shots, a 13-1 edge in shots on goal and a 9-4 margin in penalty corners.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Washington and Lee controlled possession from the opening whistle, outshooting Catholic 7-0 and earning four penalty corners during a scoreless first quarter.
- The Generals broke through at the 16:59 mark when Madeline Lancione finished a feed from Zoe Dolfis for her second goal of the season.
- W&L doubled its advantage at 23:49 as Lauren Zoota found the back of the cage off an assist from Charlotte Dreany. The tally marked the first collegiate goal of Zoota's career.
- Less than three minutes later, Libby Bowers converted a penalty stroke at 26:41 for her first collegiate goal, sending the Generals into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.
- Lancione struck for the second time at 38:27, finishing an assist from Margaret Scheurer to extend the lead to 4-0. The goal gave Lancione her first multi-goal performance of the season, third of her career, and her third tally through three contests.
- Catholic generated its only two shots of the afternoon late in the third quarter. Helenka Chodakiewicz stopped the Cardinals' lone shot on goal, and neither team registered an attempt during the fourth quarter.
TOP W&L PERFORMERS
- Madeline Lancione led the offensive effort with two goals on seven shots, placing six attempts on cage. She increased her season total to a team-high three goals.
- Lauren Zoota recorded the first goal of her collegiate career, scoring in the 24th minute.
- Libby Bowers also registered her first collegiate goal, converting W&L's penalty stroke in the second quarter.
- Zoe Dolfis, Charlotte Dreany and Margaret Scheurer each tallied an assist in the win.
- Helenka Chodakiewicz recorded the first shutout of her collegiate career, making one save to improve to 2-1 in goal.
