ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The No. 21 Washington and Lee University field hockey team scored once in each quarter and turned in another dominant performance, on both ends of the field, in a 4-0 non-conference victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Sunday afternoon at JLR Stadium.
The Generals improved to 3-1 overall and extended their winning streak to three games, while recording their second consecutive shutout. Washington and Lee controlled the contest statistically, finishing with a 22-3 advantage in shots, an 11-1 edge in shots on goal and a commanding 14-1 margin in penalty corners.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Washington and Lee wasted little time getting on the board, as Charlotte Dreany scored just 1:47 into the contest following the first penalty corner of the game. Lauren Zoota provided the assist on Dreany's first goal of the season.
- The Generals continued to apply pressure throughout the opening quarter, generating eight shots and six penalty corners while holding St. Mary's without a shot.
- Margaret Cover doubled the W&L lead at 25:24, cleaning up a loose ball at the left post following a broken pass in front of the cage. The unassisted tally sent the Generals into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
- W&L added to its lead at 34:35 when Britty Page capitalized on a second-chance opportunity following a Generals penalty corner, finding the cage for her first goal of the season.
- St. Mary's produced its lone shot on goal late in the third quarter, but Helenka Chodakiewicz turned away the attempt to preserve the shutout.
- Following a broken penalty corner in the fourth quarter, Cecilia Hartford redirected a shot from Margaret Scheurer into the cage at 54:53 to close the scoring at 4-0.
