LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee Michael F. Walsh Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced the hiring of Malcolm Gibson as Assistant Football Coach. Gibson will work with the running backs and special teams.
Gibson joins the W&L football coaching staff after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Salisbury University. While there, Gibson served as an offensive and special teams assistant, working mostly with slots, superbacks and corners in punt returns. Off the field, Gibson aided in team recruiting, organizing meetings and presentations, and he supplied creative input as a social media consultant.
"I am honored for the opportunity to be a part of the community and traditions of this prestigious institution," stated Gibson. "I look forward to being able to connect with the student-athletes and the W&L campus community as a whole. I was able to learn immensely from hall of fame coaches during my time at Salisbury, as a player and as a coach, and I'm very proud to have been a part such an elite program. I believe that experience will be vital in continuing the winning tradition here at W&L."
During his three seasons on staff, the Sea Gulls accumulated a 19-4 overall record and a perfect 14-0 mark in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play, with two conference titles and a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament. Under his assistance, the Sea Gulls finished the 2021 (324.3) and 2022 (325.4) seasons with the third-most rushing yards per game in Division III.
Prior to his appointment on the SU coaching staff, Gibson finished out his playing career as an undergraduate for the Salisbury football team in 2019 after suiting up for Coe College during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He helped Coe win the Iowa-Inter Athletic Conference (IIAC) championship in 2016, with an NCAA Second Round appearance, before being part of Salisbury's 2019 NJAC title and NCAA Quarterfinal run.
Gibson also earned experience as a broadcaster while at Salisbury, providing play-by-play and color commentary for various varsity sports. He trained multiple students in the art of broadcasting and necessary procedures to be effective on-air.
Gibson obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications: Multi-Media Journalism with a minor in athletic coaching from Salisbury in December 2021, and is in the process of earning his Master of Business Administration degree from SU.
