LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped a Wednesday evening contest to No. 3 Shenandoah University by a score of 9-0.
The Hornets (25-2, 10-1 ODAC) made all the buzz at the plate, scoring every run in the game, combining for nine runs on 17 hits. Following a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Tyler Blittersdorf, Shenandoah made its mark with a two-RBI single by senior left fielder Hadan Madagan in the second inning to put the first two runs on the board.
The Generals (13-11, 7-7 ODAC) held the lead to two, getting runners on the base in the first three of four innings, but were unable to capitalize in key moments. With runners on the corners in the bottom of the fourth, a well-placed infield hit by junior shortstop
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) looked like it would find the hole and score a run, but a heads-up play by Hornet third baseman Ryan Clawson wrangled the ball got the out at first.
Shenandoah kept the Generals held at zero while putting up runs of their own. The Hornets tallied a run in the fifth and sixth, including sixth inning solo shot by Madagan down the left-field line. A strong three-run seventh inning gave Shenandoah a comfortable lead. Four singles followed by a sacrifice fly pushed the Hornet lead to seven.
Junior second baseman
Jacob Jackson (Norfolk, Va./Maury) stood out in the Generals' lineup going 4-for-4 with a stolen base, as he reached base on every at-bat. First-year right fielder
Paul Ramseur (Atlanta, Ga./Pace), sophomore catcher
Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va./Centreville), and sophomore designated hitter
Jack Belbot (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) recorded the final three hits for the Blue and White.
The Hornets ended the day with four batters putting up three-hit games. Senior right fielder Gavin Horning and graduate first baseman Pearce Bucher both had three hits and scored twice. Madagan and graduate second baseman Kyle Lisa both finished 3-for-5, with Madagan adding three runs batted in and a solo shot.
Sophomore pitcher
Matt Fleming (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) (2-2) had a promising start against the No. 3 ranked team. During his 5.1-inning outing, Fleming allowed four runs while striking out three. Junior pitcher
Ashwin Suresh (Glen Allen, Va./Douglas S. Freeman) ended the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Senior pitcher Jacob Bell (5-0) earned the win for the Hornets with an eight-inning performance. Bell allowed zero runs on seven hits, with nine punchouts. Junior pitcher Parker Farrington closed the game with a three-up, three-down ninth, including two strikeouts.
The Generals are back in action on Saturday, April 15 to host Hampden-Sydney for an ODAC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon.
