LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 25 Washington and Lee men's tennis team swept its way into the ODAC Semifinals, 5-0, over Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.
No. 2 doubles, with sophomores
Will Kistler (Hilton Head, S.C. / Laurel Springs School) and
Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek), and No. 3 doubles, featuring junior
Connor Coleman (Birmingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) and first-year
Mateo Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparrel), both breezed to wins to open the match. Kistler and Hirshberg won by an 8-0 score, while Coleman and Moss dropped just two games.
Sophomore
Evan Erb (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) and senior
Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) also claimed victory at No. 1, but were pushed to 14 games by Holland Baynard and Xan Johnston before closing it out, 8-6.
In singles, Brady and Hirshberg picked up the two necessary wins for the team victory. Brady won by a 6-0, 6-1 score at No. 3, and Hirshberg defeated Max Doyle, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4. The four other Generals playing singles were each up a set when the match ended, with Coleman (6-0, 5-1) and Erb (6-1, 4-0) nearing completion at No. 5 and No. 1, respectively.
The Generals will play in the ODAC Semifinals at home on Saturday at 1:30 pm against the winner of the Lynchburg/Virginia Wesleyan quarterfinal.
