HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The No. 39 Washington and Lee men's tennis team improved to 10-6 overall and 6-0 in ODAC play on Friday with an 8-1 win at Hampden-Sydney.
The Generals cruised to a 3-0 lead through doubles play, which included an 8-0 win at No. 3 from junior
Connor Coleman (Birmingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) and sophomore
James Kurani (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day), and a near-sweep of 8-1 at No. 2 from sophomores
Will Kistler (Hilton Head, S.C. / Laurel Springs School) and
Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek).
Hirshberg dropped just one game at No. 3 singles en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Henry Singleton. First-year
Jake Vo (Plano, Texas / John Paul II) (6) and senior
Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) (2) also sailed to straight-set wins by respective scores of 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1. Coleman (4) and Kurani (5) both needed three sets to pick up wins, but both players left little doubt to the decision, as Coleman outpaced Casey Coffey, 10-1, in the third set, while Kurani downed Taylor Fox, 6-1, in the third.
The Tigers (6-8, 1-2 ODAC) earned their lone point of the match at the top singles position in a slugfest between Kistler and Barrett Foster. Foster pulled out the three-set win, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-1), 10-6, over Kistler.
The Generals will return to play on Tuesday when they host Bridgewater at 3:00 pm in the team's Pride Match.
