GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 8 Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team faced ODAC competition for the first time this season on Saturday and came away with a 25-4 win at Guilford.
W&L (6-1, 1-0 ODAC) scored the game's first six goals across the opening 10 minutes of play, with senior
Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) leading the way with two goals and an assist. After the Quakers (4-2, 0-1 ODAC) dented the scoreboard for the first time at the 3:49 mark of the first, the Generals scored nine straight goals until 1:33 remained in the second quarter. During this second run, sophomores
Joey Allen (Berwyn, Pa. / Conestoga) and
Hillis Burns (Louisville, Ky. / St. Xavier), along with junior
Alex Brown (Norwalk, Conn. / Taft School) each scored a pair of goals.
Guilford's Gavin Brown scored with 53 seconds before halftime for the team's second goal, but junior
Will Bou (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon) found Pokorny for an answer just 14 seconds later to give the Generals a 16-2 halftime lead.
Pokorny's goal was the first of the team's second 9-0 run of the game, which spanned until four seconds remained in the third quarter. Sophomore
Gavin McLernan (Towson, Md. / Boys' Latin) scored off an assist from senior
Wyatt Hamilton (Lynchburg, Va. / E.C. Glass) to end the run, which capped an 8-0 quarter for the Blue and White.
The fourth quarter favored the Quakers by a 2-1 margin. First-year
Byron Newman (Catonsville, Md. / Catonsville) was responsible for W&L's final goal with 8:05 left in the game.
W&L received a well-balanced scoring effort on Saturday as 13 different players tallied multiple points. Pokorny finished with a game-high five points on four goals and an assist, while Brown scored three times and added an assist for four points. Bou and junior
Nick Tussing (Owings Mills, Md. / Gilman) performed strongly on face-offs, as Bou won 15-of-19 to Tussing's 11-of-12 performance. Both players picked up a game-high seven ground balls.
Between the pipes, first-year
Ryan Boyd (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) (5-1) picked up the win after he made three saves on five shots in the first half. Senior
Warren Seeds (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) (21:35), junior
Ryan Aljader (Levittown, N.Y. / Chaminade) (5:32) and sophomore
Keene Cornick (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) (2:53) each saw time in the second half. The trio combined for two goals allowed, with one save coming from Seeds.
Four different players scored for Guilford on the day, with Gabe Alvarez earning an assist on a Joe Hirvonen man-up goal in the fourth quarter. Ezekiel Gravley picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers, both team highs. In goal, Gavin Dellinger was tagged with the loss after he made six saves in the first half, with 16 goals allowed.
W&L held a 47-26 shot margin in the game, which included a 37-8 advantage in attempts on goal. The Generals forced Guilford into 21 turnovers, while committing 14 themselves, and won the ground ball battle by a final count of 43-19.
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday when they host third-ranked Christopher Newport at 7:00 pm in the annual Virginia Lacrosse the Nations Cup game.
