No. 39 Men's Tennis Shuts Out Ferrum and Guilford on the Road

FERRUM, Va. / GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 39th-ranked Washington and Lee University men's tennis team went 2-0 in ODAC competition today in matches at Ferrum College and Guilford College and swept both opponents on the road. 

The Generals (9-4, 5-0 ODAC) opened with a 9-0 victory over the Panthers (0-4, 0-2) then followed with a 9-0 league win against the Quakers (3-3, 2-1) in the split-squad efforts. 

GUILFORD MATCH

Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) and Evan Erb (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS), the No. 1 doubles tandem had the closest doubles of the day, an 8-6 win over Andres Merces and Tye Sasser. Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek) and Will Kistler (Hilton Head, S.C. / Laurel Springs) swept Drake Schreiber and Rishi Halukurike 8-0 in the No. 2 doubles and Connor Coleman (Brimingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christrian) and James Kurani (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) defeated Evan Wong and Rylan Tuten 8-3 on court three to start the match. 

In the top singles position, Erb and Merces split the first two games, 5-7 and 6-2, before Erb won the third set 10-4. Kistler then defeated Schreiber 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 and Brady took down Tye in a pair of 6-1 sets in the third position. Hirshberg and Kurani won the No. 4 and No. 6 matches, respectively. Coleman played in the fifth position today and his first set went into the tie break. Coleman edged out Tuten 7-3 to claim the first set followed by a dominant 6-1 performance in the second for the clean sweep over Guilford. 

FERRUM MATCH

The Blue and White won No. 2 and No. 3 doubles 8-0; Mateo Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) and Jake Vo (Plano, Texas / John Paul II) defeated Nico Roth and Will Davis at No. 2 and Christian Basnight (Virginia Beach, Va. / Landstown) and Josh Rassin (Houston, Texas, Lamar) defeated Alexis Fidalgo and Josh Johnson on the third court. In the No. 1 doubles, Jonathan Molner (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett) and Rider Yeaman (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal School of Dallas) teamed up to take down Gabrial Alvarez and Kevin Nester, 8-1. 

Vo, Yeaman, Molner, Basnight and Rassin all won their singles matches with clean sheets, and in the two spot Moss, conceded a single tally in the second set but defeated Nester 6-0, 6-1. 

Up next, the Blue and White will travel to Hampden-Sydney for a 3:00 p.m. ODAC match on Friday, March 24.
