CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The 11th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team rallied to score seven of the final nine goals in the game to upend Washington College by a 15-10 score on Saturday afternoon.
After a pair of WC (1-1) goals tied the game at 8-8 early in the third quarter, sophomore
Joey Allen (Berwyn, Pa. / Conestoga) helped the Generals regain a two-goal lead with an assist to junior
Sam Mannino (Fair Haven, N.J. / Rumson Fair Haven) at 8:44, followed by an Allen goal just 61 seconds later. The Shoremen answered with a TC White goal at 4:53, before three consecutive goals from the Generals pushed their lead to four.
Cory Morgan scored for WC with 4:29 left in the game, but junior
Leif Smith (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) (3:34) and Mannino (2:24) secured the win for W&L with the final two goals of the game.
Seniors
Will Schnorr (Paoli, Pa. / Conestoga) and
Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) dented the scoreboard in the opening two and a half minutes for the Generals, before the Shoremen scored three straight goals to take a 3-2 into the second quarter. W&L answered with a 3-0 run of its run, which included two goals from sophomore
Hillis Burns (Louisville, Ky. / St. Xavier) and a goal and two assists to Allen.
Allen led the way for the Generals with eight points on four goals and four assists, while Mannino and Burns each scored three goals. Mannino also added an assist and a ground ball to his line. Other multi-point scorers included Pokorny at one goal and one assist, and senior
Adam Lamberti (Bel Air, Md. / McDonogh) with two goals, in addition to two ground balls.
Through the team's first three games this season, both Allen and Burns have racked up 15 points on 10 goals and five assists apiece. The goal and assist totals are currently tied for fourth in the ODAC, while the 15 points are tied for second in the conference.
Junior
Will Bou (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon) had another strong performance at the face-off X, winning 16-of-24, while picking up four ground balls. Bou's four ground balls tied with Pokorny, first-year
Ryan Boyd (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) and sophomore
Brian Barringer (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln Sudbury Regional) for the team high. Senior
Alex Kelly (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) highlighted W&L's defensive efforts with three caused turnovers and a ground ball.
In goal, Boyd picked up his third win of the season after making eight saves in 59:46 of action.
Ewan Temple led all WC scorers with four points on two goals and two assists. Brady McFalls also scored twice and Connor Garrison contributed two points on one goal and one assist, with a game-high 11 shot attempts. White finished the game with six caused turnovers and five ground balls and Gabe Velasquez picked up a game-best six ground balls. Tyler Bishop also had a strong defensive performance with four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Cole Corrigan played all 60 minutes between the pipes for the Shoremen and made 12 saves.
Total shots favored the Shoremen by a slight 44-43 margin, but W&L held advantages in ground balls (39-34) and face-offs won (18-11).
The Generals will get back in action on Sunday, March 5, when they travel to Granville, Ohio, for a 1:00 pm face-off against Denison.
