Generals win home battle over Centre, 6-3

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team earned its second win in as many days, defeating Centre by a 6-3 score on Sunday in the Duchossois Tennis Center.

The Generals (3-0) started hot and claimed victory in all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Junior Connor Coleman (Birmingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) and sophomore James Kurani (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) won 8-3 at No. 3 in the largest margin in doubles play. Sophomore Evan Erb (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) and Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) (1) and sophomores Will Kistler (Hilton Head, S.C. / Laurel Springs School) and Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek) (2) each earned 8-5 victories.

Erb, Hirshberg and Coleman posted the wins in singles for the Blue and White, and each won in straight sets. Erb defeated Faraz Ghamgosar, 6-4, 6-3, at the top spot, Hirshberg glided to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jett Anderson at No. 4 and a 7-5, 6-4 decision favored Coleman at No. 5 over Chase Turley.

Despite singles losses to Brady, Kistler and Kurani, each of their three matches needed a third set to decide a winner, with Brady and Kurani forcing the decisive third sets with second-set wins.

The Generals will have eight days off before their next match when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan in their ODAC opener on Monday, February 20, in a 1:00 pm start.
