LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2022-23 schedule with a 9-0 sweep of Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
Six Generals (2-0) made the lineup for the day. Sophomore
Evan Erb (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) and senior
Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) won at the top doubles position by an 8-1 decision and also claimed straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Erb downed Isaac Rockower, 6-1, 6-1, and Brady earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Gonzalo Gentou.
Sophomores
Will Kistler (Hilton Head, S.C. / Laurel Springs School) and
Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek) won by an 8-6 score at No. 2 doubles, and junior
Connor Coleman (Birmingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) and sophomore
James Kurani (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) matched that mark in a win at No. 3.
Kistler went on to win, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, followed by a 6-0, 6-4 victory for Hirshberg at No. 4. Coleman cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 and Kurani, who dropped the fewest singles games of the day, earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tommy Hicks in the final spot.
The Generals will return to the courts on Sunday when they host Centre at 10:00 am. The two programs have met three times in their series history but have not battled since May 11, 1973. W&L owns a 3-0 record all-time against the Colonels.
