ATLANTA – The 17th-ranked Washington and Lee women's basketball team continued its surging start to the 2023-24 season with an 89-52 win over Oglethorpe on Sunday in the second and final day of the TownPlace Suites Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Senior
Hanna Malik led the Generals' (10-1) impressive first quarter with 13 points in the first 10 minutes. She nailed her first two three-point shots, the first six points of the game, which were part of an overall 13-2 run to open the contest. The Stormy Petrels (7-4) managed a slight 8-6 edge over the next 3:24, but W&L closed the first with 12 straight points on the front end of a 25-3 run into the second quarter, leaving the Blue and White up, 44-16, with 4:34 before the half.
In the first half, the Generals shot 20-of-39 (.513) while limiting Oglethorpe to 6-of-31 (.194) shooting from the field. Malik led all scorers with 15 points in the first half, followed by sophomores
Quinn McGuinness (9) and
Elka Prechel (6).
The Generals kept their feet on the gas in the second half and opened the third quarter on a 15-2 run to push their lead to 67-23 at the 4:28 mark. Sophomore
Mary Schleusner led that run with nine points, and the team shot 5-of-8 from the field.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Schleusner paced W&L with 18 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks, and she shot 8-of-12 from the field. Malik finished the game with 15 points, while McGuinness and Prechel both scored nine. McGuinness also dished out a team-high five assists and came away with three steals, while first-year
Icy Keneah pulled in eight rebounds.
Keimarya Rivera was the lone Stormy Petrel player to score in double figures, as she logged 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting. Kat Johnson scored seven points, but she was limited to 3-of-12 shooting, and Malia Melton tallied six points.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Prechel made three triples on nine attempts in the game, giving her 102 career three-point makes to become the 10th player in program history to cross the century mark. She can tie Kate Groninger '22 for ninth place in program history with three more.
With her 15 points, Malik crossed the 900-point mark in her career and needs 92 more points to become the 15th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point barrier. The last General to do so was
Erin Hughes '21 in 2021.
The team's win on Sunday gives W&L a 10-1 start to the season to continue the best start in program history. The program's previous best 11-game start was 9-2, which came during the 2014-15 season.
TEAM STATS:
W&L finished the game at an even 40.0 percent (32-80) shooting from the field, in addition to 70.8 percent (17-24) from the free throw line. Oglethorpe was limited to 24.2 percent (16-66) shooting from the floor and 16.7 percent (3-18) from long range.
It marked the third consecutive game that W&L's opponent has made 3-of-18 three-point shots, and it is the seventh time this season that the Generals have held the opposition to 20 percent shooting or worse from deep. The Blue and White are 7-0 in those seven contests with an average margin of victory of 25.1 points.
The Generals also held sizeable margins on Sunday in second-chance points (24-5), points in the paint (44-18) and fastbreak points (16-2).

The Generals will break for Christmas before returning to action on December 30 with a 6:00 p.m. conference matchup at home against Virginia Wesleyan.
