Generals Reel In Marlins, Clinch Spot in ODAC Championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team battled back from a one set deficit to knock off the top-seeded Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University to secure their spot in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship match. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Set One | 25-20 VWU
  • The Marlins jumped out to an early 7-2 lead as Hannah Smith, Emma Claytor, and Abigail Mahoney each recorded kills during a six point swing. 
  • W&L went on a 6-2 run to take a 15-14 lead as Avery Myers recprded a kill and Vivi Vasquez earned a service ace. 
  • Another six point swing from VWU put them up 22-16 and Kate Ayre put the set away as she notched the last kill of the set to give the Marlins a 25-20 win. 
  • Hannah Smith of Virginia Wesleyan led the set with six kills on 12 attempts with two errors for a .333 hitting percentage. Sydney Heifner led the Generals with four kills on 16 attempts for a .188 hitting percentage.
  • VWU's Haley Sutton dished out a set-high ten assists while Allie Buchholz dished out 9 assists on 28 attempts  for a .321 hitting percentage. 

Set Two | 31-29 W&L
  • Virginia Wesleyan held a 14-10 advantage but kills from Heifner and Riley Debiec helped the Blue and White rattled off four unanswered points to tie the set. 
  • The Generals used a 6-1 run to take a 24-20 score but the Marlins would score four straight points to even the score. 
  • Both teams traded points until a Grace Mitchener attack error gave the Marlins a 29-28 advantage. Emery Goerig evened the score as she finished off a Buchholz assist before back-to-back Marlin attack errors gave the Generals a 31-29 win in the second frame. 
  • VWU's Emma Claytor led all players with six kills on nine attempts  for a .667 hitting percentage. Hannah Smith and Abigail Mahoney of VWU and Mitchener each recorded five kills. 
  • Buchholz and VWU's Haley Sutton each dished out 14 assists during the set. 
  • Vivi Vasquex led all players with 11 digs while Hannah Smith led the Marlins with eight digs. 

Set Three | 26-24 W&L
  • The Marlins kicked off the third set with an 8-3 run before extending their lead to 14-7 as they rattled off four unanswered points off of three Emma Claytor kills. 
  • Washington and Lee went on a 9-1 run to take a one point lead. Debiec, Mitchener and Myers each recorded kills during the swing to give the Generals a 16-15 advantage.
  • After back and forth action, the Generals closed the set out with a 4-1 run which featured two kills from Heifner and one from Myers to give the Blue and White a 2-1 set lead. 
  • Emma Claytor of Va. Wes. led the set with eight kills on 12 attempts for a .583 hitting percentage. Myers led the Generals with six kills on 17 attempts for a .353 hitting percentage. 
  • Buchholz posted a set-high 11 assists on 32 attempts for a .344 hitting percentage. Virginia Wesleyan's Haley Sutton dished out nine assists while Trisha Guevara recorded eight. 

Set Four | 25-14 W&L
  • The Generals came out firing in the fourth set, going on a 16-4 run to stun the Marlins. This run featured five kills from Heifner, four from Debiec and one from Myers and Goerig. 
  • The Blue and White took a 21-9 lead as Myers and Heifner recorded back-to-back kills while Maddie Weller netted a service ace. 
  • Following a three point swing from the Marlins, Heifner put the match away as she finished off a Penelope Quiles assist to upset the No. 1 seed and the send the Generals back to the ODAC Championship. 
  • Heifner led the set with eight kills on 16 attempts with one error for a .438 hitting percentage while Debiec recorded six kills on 13 attempts for a .385 hitting percentage. 
  • Buchholz dished out a set-high 14 assists on 23 attempts for a .609 setting percentage. 
  • Vasquez dug out a set-high 11 attacks while Quiles, Weller and Buchholz eached recorded four digs. 

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals move to 21-10 on the season while making their first trip back to the conference championship  since 2021. The Blue and White are playing in the tournament final for the third time in five years. 
  • Washington and Lee recorded 56 kills on 172 attempts with 13 errors for a .250 hitting percentage. They posted a match-high .283 hitting percentage during their fourth and final set. 
  • Despite winning the match, the Generals only led one of the six team categories as they recorded a match-high five service aces. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN GAME NOTES
  • The Marlins finished the season with a 26-6 record while posting a perfect 12-0 record in conference play. 
  • VWU recorded 69 kills on 201 attempts with 27 errors for a .209 hitting percentage while posting a match-high .417 hitting percentage during the first set. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan led five of six team categories including points (78), blocks (6), assists (65) and digs (92).

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Sydney Heifner led all players with a season-high 21 kills on 54 attempts with two errors for a .352 hitting percentage. Avery Myers recorded 15 kills while Riley Debiec had 11. 
  • Allie Buchholz recorded her 22nd double-double of the season as she dished out 48 assists while digging out 16 attacks. She has recorded 30 or more assists in 19 matches this season. 
  • Vivi Vasquez led all players with 34 digs, she has dug 20 or more attacks in nine matches this season. 
  • Emery Goerig recorded five kills on six attempts for a .833 hitting percentage while earning two blocks. Goerig has a team-high 73 blocks on the season. 

UP NEXT
  • The Generals will travel to Ashland, Va. for the ODAC Championship on Saturday, Nov. 11 as they will take on second-seed Randolph-Macon College at 10 a.m.
