Women’s Volleyball Stings Yellow Jackets, Claims 19th ODAC Title

ASHLAND, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team reigned victorious once again as they knocked off second-seeded Randolph-Macon College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon to claim the program's 19th Old Dominion Athletic Conference Title. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Set One | 25-20 RMC
  • After Avery Myers picked up her first kill of the afternoon to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to one, Randolph-Macon rattled off ten straight points to take a 14-3 lead. 
  • Riley Debiec kicked off a four point swing for the Generals as she finished off an Allie Buchholz assist to cut the deficit to seven. 
  • Four straight RMC attack errors put the Generals within five but the Yellow Jackets kept their distance as they matched each point W&L scored. 
  • Grace Mitchener finished off an Allie Buchholz assist to cut the RMC lead to 24-20 but Ashlyn Knott put the set away as she finished off a Milly Mach assist to close out the first frame. 
  • Grace Parker of RMC led all players with seven players on 20 attempts for a .250 hitting percentage. Debiec and Mitchener led the Genreals with three kills each. 
  • Randolph-Macon's Milly Mach led all players with 14 assists while Buchholz dished out nine assists on 47 attempts for a .191 setting percentage. 

Set Two | 25-17 W&L
  • After RMC took a 3-1 lead, the Generals used a five point swing to take a 6-3 lead early in the set. Myers and Debiec each recorded a kill during the run. 
  • Two kills from Debiec and one from Sydney Heifner and Buchholz put the Generals up 12-5 as they went on a 6-1 run. 
  • Washington and Lee took a 24-13 lead late in the first set as Heifner recorded two kills and Myers netted one of her own to put the Generals one point away from evening the match score. 
  • After the Yellow Jackets cut the Generals lead seven, Kaitlyn Kaplan's next serve wasn't put in play, giving W&L a 25-17 set two win. 
  • Myers and Debiec led all players with four kills while Myers had a match-high .667 hitting percentage. Grace Parker, Megan Bost, and Ashlynn Knott each recorded three kills for 
  • Buchholz dished out a set-high 11 assist on 31 attempts for a .355 setting percentage. 

Set Three | 25-15 W&L 
  • After both teams traded points to kick off the match, Debiec recorded a kill to start a four point swing, giving the Generals an 8-6 lead. Heifner and Mitchener each recorded kills in the run while Penelope Quiles tallied her second service ace of the set. 
  • The Yellow Jackets kept the score within two as Grace Parker finished off a Milly Mach assist to bring the score to 16-14 but kills from Heifner and Debiec extended their lead back to four.
  • The Blue and White rattled off seven unanswered points to close out the third frame and put the Generals one set away from claiming the ODAC crown. This run featured two kills from Debiec and Mitchener as well as a Heifner service ace. 
  • Mitchener and Debiec each recorded a set-high six kills while Debiec recorded a team-high .556 hitting percentage. Grace Parker recorded five kills for the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Buchholz led all players with 16 assists on 27 attempts for a .593 setting percentage. RMC's Milly Mach dished out eight assists for a .286 percentage. 

Set Four | 25-16 W&L
  • The Generals found themselves with an early 5-0 lead as Mitchener recorded a service ace and Heifner finished off a Buchholz assist. The Blue and White earned three of their points off of RMC attack errors. 
  • After a three point run from the Yellow Jackets, Mitchener netted back-to-back kills to give the Generals a 12-5 lead. 
  • The Generals took a 23-14 lead after Heifner and Buchholz recorded kills to put the Generals within two points of the win. 
  • Buchholz found Mitchener for the final point of the afternoon as Mitchener earned the kill, giving the Generals the ODAC crown.
  • Heifner led all players with five kills on 14 attempts for a .357 hitting percentage. Grace Parker of RMC and Mitchener each recorded four kills in the final set. 
  • Randolph-Macon's Milly Mach dished out a set-high 12 assists while Buchholz led the Generals with ten assists on 26 attempts for a .385 percentage. 
  • Vasquez led all players with eight digs while dishing out two assists. Kaitlyn Kaplan, Grace Parker, and Maddy DeCandido all dug out five attacks for the Yellow Jackets. 

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals claimed their 19th ODAC title in program history and their fourth title since 2018. With the win, the Blue and White are headed to the NCAA Tournament as they locked up the conference's automatic bid. 
  • This is the first time in program history that the Generals claimed the ODAC Championship as a #4 seed.
  • The Blue and White recorded 56 kills on 169 attempts with 14 errors for a .249 hitting percentage; they posted a match-high .429 hitting percentage during the third set. 
  • Washington and Lee led five of the six team categories including blocks (6), assists (51) and digs (95). 

RANDOLPH-MACON GAME NOTES
  • The Yellow Jackets fall to 10-2 on the season. 
  • RMC recorded 50 kills on 183 attempts with 25 errors for a .137 hitting percentage; they had a team-high .219 hitting percentage during the third set. 

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Riley Debiec led the Generals with 15 kills on 38 attempts with two errors for a .342 hitting percentage. Grace Mitchener (14), Sydney Heifner (13) and Avery Myers (10) each recorded double digit kills 
  • Allie Buchholz dished out a match-high 46 assists on 131 attempts for a .351 percentage. This was her 20th match this season with 30 or more assists. 
  • Vivi Vasquez dug out a match-high 35 digs, this is her tenth match this season with 20 or more digs. 
  • Ryan Taylor recorded two kills on three attempts for a .667 hitting percentage while leading all players with three blocks. 
  • Following the match, Vivi Vasquez, Avery Myers and Allie Buchholz were selected to the All-Tournament teams for their performances throughout their postseason run.
