MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Playing in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last five years,, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team's season came to an end as they fell to tenth-ranked Berry College (Ga.) in four sets on Thursday night at the Cage Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One | 25-18 Berry
- The Vikings found themselves with an 8-5 lead following back-to-back kills from Jazzy Innis and Lura Underwood.
- Emery Goerig got the Generals back within three as she finished off a Allie Buchholz assist but Berry rattled off seven unanswered points to take a 20-10 lead.
- Kills from Sydney Heifner, Grace Mitchener and Riley Debiec brought the Generals within five points but Lura Underwood put the match away as she finished off a Lindsey MacDiarmid assist to take the first set 25-18.
- Jazzy Innis led all players with seven kills on 16 attempts with one errors for a .375 hitting percentage. Mitchener led the Generals with six kills on 11 attempts for a .545 hitting percentage.
- Lindsey MacDiarmid dished out a set-high 15 assists while Buchholz recorded 11 assists on 31 attempts for a .355 setting percentage.
Set Two | 27-25 W&L
- After Berry got on the board first in the set, the Generals scored four unanswered points to take an early 4-1 lead. Mitchener and Avery Myers each recorded a kill while Mitchener netted a service ace.
- Following back and forth action, three Berry errors put the Generals in front 12-7 but the Vikings narrowed the lead to two as they went on a 4-1 run.
- The Generals took a 23-19 lead and seemed to have the momentum but the Vikings stormed back with a 6-1 run to take a 25-24 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Generals scored three straight points to take the set 27-25.
- Myers and Debiec led all players with four kills each, Debiec posted a set-high .375 hitting percentage. MacDiarmid, Innis and Bella Boston each recorded three kills for the Vikings.
- Buchholz dished out a set-high 12 assists on 38 attempts for a .316 setting percentage.
Set Three | 25-17 Berry
- Kills from Jazzy Innis and Olivia Mallow propelled the Vikings in front 9-5 early in the third set. They saw their lead increase as they went on a 7-1 run to take an 18-9 lead.
- The Generals responded with a 5-1 run of their own to cut the deficit to five. This run featured two kills and a service ace from Heifner.
- Another five point swing from the Vikings put them one point from taking the set but two more kills from Heifner and one from Buchholz put W&L down 24-17. A bad set from Buchholz closed out the first frame, giving Berry a 2-1 set advantage.
- Olivia Mallow of Berry led all players with five kills on 12 attempts for a .417 hitting percentage. Heifner led the Generals with four kills on 13 attempts with one error for a .231 hitting percentage.
- MacDiarmid of Berry led all players with 11 assists on 30 attempts for a .367 setting percentage, Buchholz dished out six assists for a .176 percentage.
Set Four | 25-20 Berry
- The fourth set kicked off with back and forth action before Debiec gave the Blue and White their first lead of the set as she finished off a Buchholz assist to put W&L up 10-9. The Vikings quickly responded, going on a 5-1 run to retake a three points lead.
- Debiec cut the Berry lead to one as her and Buchholz connected for another kill but the Vikings scored five unanswered points to take a 23-17 lead.
- Mitchener put the Generals within four but Jazzy Innis sealed the match for the Vikings as she finished off a MacDiarmid assist to take the fourth and final set 25-20.
- Lura Underwood led all players with seven kills while Mitchener and Debiec led the Generals with three kills each.
- MacDiarmid posted a set-high 17 assists on 41 attempts with one error for a .415 setting percentage, Buchholz dished out eight assists on 33 attempts for a .242 percentage.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals finished the season with a 22-11 overall record while claiming their 19th Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament championship in program history.
- The Blue and White recorded 43 kills on 188 attempts with 23 errors for a .106 hitting percentage; they posted a match-high .188 hitting percentage during the first set.
BERRY GAME NOTES
- The tenth-ranked Vikings improved to 27-5 on the season, moving onto the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
- Berry recorded 66 kills on 184 attempts with 21 errors for a .245 hitting percentage; they posted a match-high a .348 percentage in the first set.
- The Vikings led all six team categories including service aces (5), blocks (9), assists (61), and digs (104).
TOP PERFORMERS
- Jazzy Innis of Berry registered a match-high 16 kills on 43 attempts with one error for a .349 hitting percentage. Lura Underwood, Bella Boston, Olivia Mallow each recorded ten or more kills for the Vikings.
- Grace Mitchener led the Generals with 12 kills on 40 attempts with five errors for a .175 hitting percentage. Sydney Heifner and Riley Debiec each recorded nine kills for the Blue and White.
- Lindsey MacDiarmid recorded a double-double, recording 52 assists while digging out 17 attacks. Allie Buchholz recorded her 23rd double-double of the season as she dished out 37 assists and dug out 18 attacks. She dished out 30 or more assists in 21 matches this season.
- Vivi Vasquez led the Generals with 24 digs, the first year libero has dug out 20 or more attacks in 11 matches this season. Berry's Kate Whittle dug out a match-high 27 attacks.
END OF SEASON NOTES
- The Generals posted 20 or more wins for the 24th time in program history and 20th season for head coach Bryan Snyder. The Blue and White finished their season with a 22-11 overall record with an 8-4 mark in conference play.
- Washington and Lee won their 19th ODAC Tournament Championships and their fourth title in the last five years.
