Women’s Volleyball Defeats Maryville, Falls to No. 11 Berry

EMORY, Ga. - Wrapping up the regular season in Georgia, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team swept Maryville College (Tenn.) Scots after falling to No. 11 Berry College (Ga.) during the second day of the Emory National Tournament. 


HOW IT HAPPENED vs #11 BERRY
  • Set Scores (23-25, 23-25, 16-25) - 3-0 Berry
  • After trailing 3-1 early in the first set, the Generals used a three-point swing to take a 4-3 lead as Grace Mitchener and Avery Myers each recorded kills before Mitchener added a service ace. 
  • Four W&L attacking errors helped the Vikings go on a 7-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. Lura Underwood and Bella Boston each recorded kills during the run. 
  • Back-to-back kills from Sydney Heifner helped the Blue and White take a 15-14 lead but shortly after, the Vikings went on a 6-1 run to take a 22-18 lead. 
  • After the Generals took a 23-22 lead with five-point swing, Olivia Mallow sealed the first set for Berry as she recorded back-to-back kills to close out the first frame. 
  • Both teams went back and forth to kick off the second set until the Vikings found themselves with a 10-6 lead after a 5-1 run. Jazzy Innis, Lindsey MacDiarmid and Cypress Guenther each recorded kills during Berry's run 
  • Washington and Lee knotted the score at 11 as they went on a 5-1 run of their own, Myers, Emery Goerig and Allie Buchholz each recorded kills while Vivi Vasquez recorded a service ace. 
  • After Mitchener finished off a Vasquez set, the Vikings took a 22-18 lead as they rattled off six straight points. 
  • The Generals stormed back to tie the game at 22 but Berry went on a 3-1 run to claim the second set 25-23. 
  • Berry kicked off the third set with a 8-1 run to jump out to a 13-7 lead after Bella Boston, Cypress Guenther, and Lindsey MacDiarmid each recorded kills. 
  • Lexie Stone recorded back-to-back kills to cut the Berry lead to eight but Bella Boston put the game away as she finished off a Lindsey MacDiarmid set.

W&L GAMES NOTES
  • The Generals recorded 38 kills on 128 attempts with 24 errors for a .109 hitting percentage. 
  • The Blue and White recorded a match-high seven service aces. 
BERRY GAME NOTES
  • The Vikings moved to 23-4 on the season, winning their 12th straight match against W&L.
  • Berry recorded 42 kills on 105 attempts with nine errors for a season-high .314 hitting percentage. They had a set-high .382 hitting percentage in the second set. 
  • The Vikings led five of the six team categories including blocks (7), assists (39) and digs (54).
 


HOW IT HAPPENED vs MARYVILLE
  • Set Scores (25-16, 25-11, 25-19) - 3-0 W&L
  • After the Generals jumped out to a 5-2 lead, the Scots rattled off six-straight points to take an 8-5 lead. 
  • W&L made broke the first set wide open as they went on a 12-1 run which featured kills from Mitchener, Debeic and Buchholz. 
  • Debiec closed out the first frame by finishing off a Buchholz assist to give the Generals a 25-16 set win. 
  • In the second set, the Generals jumped out to an 11-2 lead before rattling off six-straight points later in the set to take a 20-7 lead. During the six point swing, Buchholz recorded three-straight service aces. 
  • Two kills from Debiec and one from Mitchener helped the Blue and White close out the first frame as they won the set 25-11. 
  • Washington and Lee found themselves with a 9-6 early in the second set as Debiec recorded a kill as well as a serivce ace. 
  • Three-straight Maryville attack errors gave the Generals a 17-15 before Mitchener and Myers recorded three kills to put the Generals infront 21-17.
  • Heifner and Debiec sealed the match for the Generals as they recorded back-to-back kills to sweep the Scots for the second time this season. 
W&L GAMES NOTES
  • With the win, the Generals improved to 19-10 on the season. The Blue and White have swept the Scots twice this season, with their first meeting of the season coming on Sept. 8. 
  • Washington and Lee recorded 40 kills on 104 attempts with four errors for a .346 hitting percentage, their second best hitting percentage of the season.
  • W&L led all six team categories including service aces (7), blocks (5), assists (40) and digs (53).
MARYVILLE GAME NOTES
  • Maryville fell to 16-16 with the loss. They recorded 37 kills on 117 attempts with 23 errors for a .120 hitting percentage. 
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Riley Debiec led the Generals with 17 kills on 52 attempts with 7 errors for a .192 hitting percentage; she averaged 3.4 kills per set. 
  • Allie Buchholz dished out 58 assists on 146 attempts for a .397 setting percentage while averaging 11.60 assists per set, she also recorded a team-high five service aces. 
  • Vivi Vasquez led W&L with 26 digs, 5.20 per set, while Grace Mitchener recorded 23 digs and 4.6 per set. 
  • Avery Myers and Emery Goerig led the Generals with three total blocks.

  • The Generals return to Holekamp Gym on Tuesday, Nov. 7 as they take on Roanoke College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Quarterfinals at 7 p.m.
