Offense Shines in Quarterfinal Match against Roanoke

Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. - After dropping a tightly contested first set, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team rallied past the Roanoke College Maroons 3-1 on Tuesday night to secure their spot in the conference semifinals for the 14th straight season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Set One | 26-24 Roanoke 
  • Kills from Grace Mitchener and Avery Myers gave the Generals a 12-7 lead early in the first set but the Maroons quickly responded with an 8-2 run of their own to take a one point lead. 
  • The Blue and White were the first team to 20 in the first set as Myers recorded two kills and Emery Goerig picked up her first kill of the set. 
  • Sydney Heifner gave the Generals a 24-23 lead as she finished off an Allie Buchholz assist but the Maroons scored three unanswered points to take the set 26-24. 
  • Mitchener led the set with six kills on eight attempts for a .750 hitting percentage. 
  • Buchholz dished out a set-high 15 assists while recording three digs.

Set Two | 25-20 W&L
  • After trailing 8-6, the Generals used a five point swing to take an 11-6 lead as Heifner, Mitchener and Riley Debiec each recorded kills while Heifner added a service ace. 
  • W&L used another four point swing to take an 18-13 lead as Heifner recorded back-to-back kills while Myers and Goerig each added one. 
  • Mitchener and Goerig closed out the second frame as they recorded back-to-back kills to take the set 25-20. 
  • Mitchener recorded six kills on 16 attemtps for a .188 hitting percentage. Goerig, Heifner, and Debeic each recorded three kills in the set. 

Set Three | 25-14 W&L
  • Washington and Lee jumped out to a 10-1 lead as they rattled off the first seven points of the third set. This run featured four kills from Myers, two from Mitchener, and a Buchholz and Mitchener service ace. 
  • The Maroons cut the lead to two as they recorded back-to-back service aces to bring the score to 12-10. 
  • The Generals would close out the third set by rattling off seven unanswered points to take the set 25-14. This run featured kills from Heifner and Myers as well as a Mitchener service ace. 
  • Myers recorded a set-high six kills on 10 attemtps for a .500 hitting percentage while Heinfer recorded three. 
  • Buchholz dished out 11 assists on 27 atttemtps for a .407 setting percentage. 


Set Four | 25-13 W&L
  • After Roanoke took a 5-4 lead off a Sara Waller kill, the Generals broke the set wide open as they scored nine unanswered points to take a 13-5 lead. During this run, Heifner notched three kills while Penelope Quiles recorded a service ace. 
  • Back-to-back kills from Mitchener and Myers put the Generals up 21-9 late in the set and Heifner put the match away as she finished off a Buchholz assist to send the Blue and White back to the conference semifinals. 
  • Heifner and Mitchener led the set with five kills each while Mitchener posted a set-high .714 hitting percentage. 
  • Buchholz dished out 12 assists on 24 attempts for a .500 percentage while aslo digging out three attacks. 

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals move to 20-10 on the season while moving onto the semifinals for the 14th straight season. 
  • W&L recorded 63 kills on 166 attempts with 22 errors for a .247 hitting percentage; they hit a match-best .333 in the fourth and final set. 
  • The Blue and White led five of the six team categories including service aces (6), assists (60) and digs (76). 

ROANOKE GAME NOTES
  • The Maroons end their season with a 15-13 record and a 7-5 mark in the conference. 
  • Roanoke recorded 44 kills on 156 attemtps with 24 errors for a .128 hitting percentage.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Grace Mitchener led all players with 19 kills on 41 attemtps with 4 errors for a .366 hitting percentage.
  • Allie Buchholz recorded her 21st double-double this season as she dished out a career-high 53 assists while digging out 14 attacks. She has recorded 30 or more assists in 18 matches this season. 
  • Sydney Heifner notched her fifth double-double of the season as she recorded a season-high 14 kills while digging out 16 attacks. 
  • Vivi Vasquez led the Generals with 24 digs while dishing out three assists. Vasquez has recorded 20 or more digs in eight matches this season. 
  • Buchholz and Mitchener led the Generals with two service aces each.

  • The Generals head to Virginia Beach, Va. on Thursday, Nov. 9 for the ODAC semifinals as they will face top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan.
