Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Berea (Ky.) at Emory National Tournament

EMORY, Ga. - Traveling to Georgia for their final tournament of the season, the Washington and Lee Univeristy women's volleyball team kicked off the weekend at the Emory National Tournament by defeating Berea College (Ky.)  in straight sets on Friday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Set One | 25-13 W&L
  • The Mountaineers kept the Generals lead to one until Avery Myers kicked off a six point swing as she finished off an Allie Buchholz assist. This run also featured a Grace Mitchener kill and a Maddie Weller service ace. 
  • Five Mitchener kills helped the Generals go on a 8-1 run to close the first frame 25-13. 
  • Mitchener led the set with eight kills on 17 attempts with one error for a .412 hitting percentage. 
  • Buchholz dished out a set-high 12 assists on 27 attetmtps for a .444 setting percentage.
  • Vivi Vasquez led the set with ten digs while Buchholz dug out six attacks. 
  • Emery Goerig, Ryan Taylor and Mitchener each recorded a block

Set Two | 25-22 W&L
  • After Berea took an 8-5 lead, Riley Debiec kicked off a five point run for the Generals as she recorded her first kill of the set. 
  • The Mountaineers used a four point swing to tie the set at 17 as Lindey Fleming and Alexis McCullough each recorded kills. 
  • Goerig closed out the second frame with a kill of her own, giving the Generals a 2-0 set lead. 
  • Mitchener led the set with six kills with a .333 hitting percentage while Myers and Debiec each recorded four kills during the set. 
  • Buchholz dished out 16 assists while digging out three attacks. Goerig and Debiec each recorded one block for the Generals. 


Set Three | 25-15 W&L
  • The Mountaineers came out hot in the third set as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Two kills from Goerig and Sydney Heifner helped cut the lead to one. 
  • Two kills from Myers and a kill from Mitchener helped the Generals go on a 6-1 run to take a 14-10 lead. 
  • After a Berea service error gave the Generals a 24-15 lead, Debiec recorded a service ace to put the match away, giving the Blue and White a 25-15 win in the third and final set.
  • Heifner and Myers led the set with four kills each while Heifner posted a set-high .273 hitting percentage. 
  • Vasquez dug out a set-high eight attacks while Buchholz recorded six and Heifner had five. 

W&L GAME NOTES
  • With the win, the Generals moved to 18-9 on the season while taking down Berea in their first ever meeting. 
  • Washington and Lee had 42 kills on 133 attempts with 11 errors for a .233 hitting percentage. They posted a match-high .262 hitting percentage during the first set. 
  • W&L led five of the six team categories including service aces (5), assists (42), and digs (75).

BEREA GAME NOTES
  • The Mountaineers fell to 15-13 on the season with the loss. 
  • Berea recorded 34 kills on 137 attempts with 19 errors for a .109 hitting percentage. 
  • They led the match with seven blocks while recording two service aces, 34 assists and 68 digs. 


TOP PERFORMERS
  • Grace Mitchener led all players with 16 kills on 37 attemtps with 4 errors for a .324 hitting percentage. Avery Myers recorded nine kills while Riley Debiec had eight. 
  • Allie Buchholz dished out a match-high 38 assists this afternoon, this is her ninth straight match and 16th match overall where she has posted 30 or more assists. She also posted her 18th double-double of the season as she dug out 15 attacks. 
  • Vivi Vasquez dug out a match-high 26 attacks, her seventh match this season with 20 or more digs. 
  • Emery Goerig and Grace Mitchener led the Generals with two blocks while Buchholz recorded a match-high three service aces.

  • The Generals return to the court tomorrow morning as they take on 11th-ranked Berry College (Ga.) at 10 a.m. before facing Maryville College at 2:30 p.m.m
