Generals stifle Sea Gulls in 80-65 win in W&L Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team won its third consecutive game to open the season on Saturday afternoon in an 80-65 decision over Salisbury to kick-off the W&L Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both sides started off slowly, but W&L's (3-0) Brianna Shuttlewood connected on a three a minute and a half into the game to get the Generals going. Just after the seven-minute mark, senior Hanna Malik and sophomore Mary Schleusner powered a 13-2 run with six points each to put W&L out to an 18-6 margin. An Alex Bull jumper ended the run, but the Generals maintained their 12-point lead heading into the second quarter.

W&L not only did not allow consecutive field goals from the Sea Gulls (2-3) in the second quarter, but they held the road team to just one made field goal across the second 10 minutes, a triple from Abby Plaugher 21 seconds in. Sophomore Quinn McGuinness nailed two three-point shots in the second quarter to lead the Blue and White, as the lead swelled to 21 points (42-21) at the half.

Bull led the Salisbury attack in the third quarter with eight points, but W&L's defense continued its strong play, allowing just 4-of-16 shots to go down in the frame. Schleusner scored seven points of her own in the third to help the Generals maintain a 17-point lead heading to the fourth.

The Sea Gulls finally managed to put some good offensive possessions together in the fourth, but the W&L lead proved to be too much as Salisbury's smallest deficit of 15 points came when the final buzzer sounded.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Schleusner posted her third straight double-double to begin the season, finishing the day with 28 points (12-16 FG) and 14 rebounds, plus six blocked shots, in just 20 minutes of play. Schleusner has scored at least 23 points in all three games, grabbed 14 or more rebounds in each game and blocked at least three shots in every contest so far this season.

Malik and Shuttlewood were the next highest scorers for the Blue and White at 12 points each, and they combined for seven assists. Junior Lauren Achter narrowly missed a double-double of her own, as she recorded nine points and 12 boards. Shuttlewood and classmate Caroline Shimp tied for the team high in assists with four apiece.

Bull led the Sea Gulls' offense with 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, to go along with six rebounds, one block and three steals. Plaugher scored 14 points on just 4-of-8 shooting overall, while Nicole Miller rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
While she did not move up the career blocks list on Saturday, Schleusner did become just the fourth player in program history to reach the 100-block milestone in a career, and she has done so in just 32 games played. Next up on the career blocks list is Emma Redding '18, who finished her four-year career with 155 swats.

TEAM STATS:
The W&L offense ended the game at 43.3 percent shooting (29-67), while limiting Salisbury to 27.8 percent (20-72) and 25 percent (6-24) from deep. The Sea Gulls struggled throughout the first three quarters, combining for 20 percent (10-50) from the floor and 6.7 percent (1-15) from long range, before making just as many field goals in the fourth as they had the previous 30 minutes.

Salisbury's bench outscored W&L's by a 23-16 margin, but the Blue and White held advantages in points off turnovers (13-11), points in the paint (34-24), second-chance points (27-16) and fastbreak points (19-6).

UP NEXT:
The Generals will wrap up play at the W&L Invitational on Sunday when they play Juniata in the day's second game. Tip-off will take place just after 4:00 p.m.
