LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team defeated conference foe Shenandoah University in straight sets before falling to Eastern University (Pa.) in a five set thriller on Saturday afternoon inside Holekamp Gym.
Following their matches, the team honored senior Sydney Heifner. Heifner, a Nashville, Tennessee native, is a three-time All-ODAC selection, a two-time AVCA All-Region honoree while being named to the AVCA All-America Honorable Mention team in 2022. Heifner became the seventh player in program history to record 1,000 kills and digs in a career earlier this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs SHENANDOAH
- Set Scores (25-12, 25-14, 25-12) - 3-0 W&L
- Washington and Lee kicked off the match with an 11-4 run which featured kills by Emery Goerig, Allie Buchholz, Grace Mitchener and Riley Debiec.
- After the Hornets cut the W&L lead to seven, the Blue and White scored six straight points to close out the first frame. Michener recorded two service aces to help the Generals take the first set 25-12.
- Shenandoah jumped out to a 6-3 lead but the Generals used two Hornet attack errors and kills from Goerig and Mitchener to take a 7-6 lead.
- W&L broke the set wide open as they went on a 9-0 run which featured three kills from Debiec and Avery Myers to put the Blue and White up 19-10.
- After another four point swing for the Generals, Goerig gave the Generals a 25-14 set two win as she finished off a Buchholz assist.
- The Generals found themselves with an 8-3 lead as Myers, Michener and Goerig each recorded kills while Vivi Vasquez recorded a service ace.
- The Hornets cut the W&L lead to six but the Generals used a three point swing to jump out to a comfortable 18-9.
- Turi Trainor capped off a six-point swing as she finished off a Vasquez set to claim the third and final set, 25-12.
- Avery Myers led all players with 14 kills on 33 attempts with two errors for a .364 hitting percentage.
- Allie Buchholz recorded her 11th double-double of the season as she dished out 33 assists and dug out 18 attacks. Buchholz has recorded 30 or more assists in six straight matches and 13 times this season.
- Shenandoah's Aaliyah Chunn led all players with five total blocks.
- Allie Buchholz and Grace Mitchener led the match with two service aces each.
W&L GAMES NOTES
- The Generals move to 7-4 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play while moving to 16-8 on the season.
- W&L recorded 43 kills on 106 attempts with 15 errors for a .264 hitting percentage.
- The Blue and White led five of the six team categories including service aces (7), assists (41), and digs (62).
SHENANDOAH GAME NOTES
- Shenandoah fell to 8-16 on the season while dropping their tenth game in ODAC play.
- The Hornets had 19 kills on 105 attempts with 20 kills for a -.010 hitting percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs EASTERN (PA.)
- Set Scores (25-18, 23-25, 24-26, 25-22, 12-15) - 3-2 Eastern (Pa.)
- Two Sydney Heifner service aces and a Mitchener kill helped the Generals go on a four-point run to take 17-15 lead in the first set.
- The Blue and White went on an 8-2 run to take the first frame 25-18. This run featured four Debiec kills, two Goerig kills and a Buchholz service ace.
- The Eagles found themselves with a 7-3 lead early in the second set but back-to-back kills from Mitchener knotted the score at seven.
- After a lot of back and forth action, Eastern used a five-point swing to take a 20-19 lead before a Bridgette Kelly kill gave the Eagles a 25-23 set two win.
- After an Eastern attack error, the Generals held a 15-12 advantage but saw their lead slip away as the Eagles used a four-point swing to take a one point lead.
- Buchholz gave the Generals a 24-23 lead but the Eagles took the set 26-24 as Jailene Lugo and Lexi Couch each recorded kills.
- After trailing 8-3, the Generals took a three point lead as they went on an eight point run. This run featured kills from Debiec and Goerig as well as two Mitchener service aces.
- Back and forth action late in the set had the set knotted at 19 but the Blue and White used a 5-3 run to force a fifth and final set.
- The Eagles took a 10-7 lead in the fifth set after Lugo and Couch each recorded kills. A McKenna Cook service ace cut Eastern's lead to one but three Hannah Pringle kills gave the Eagles a 15-12 win.
- Grace Mitchener posted a double-double as she recorded a career-high 22 kills while digging out 15 attacks.
- Buchholz picked up another double-double as she dished out 51 assists while recording 16 digs.
- Vivi Vasquez posted a career-high 40 digs in her five sets of action.
W&L GAMES NOTES
- With the loss, the Generals moved to 16-9 on the season while dropping their second straight-match to the Eagles.
- W&L recorded 63 kills on 212 attempts with 28 errors for a .165 hitting percentage. The Generals led the match with 13 service aces.
EASTERN (PA.) GAME NOTES
- The Eagles moved to 21-3 on the season while taking down the Generals for the second time since 2018.
- Eastern recorded 69 kills on 203 attempts with 24 errors for a .222 hitting percentage. They led five of the six team categories including blocks (11), assists (66) and digs (110).
TOP PERFORMERS
- Grace Mitchener recorded a team-high 30 kills throughout both matches while Riley Debiec posted 28 kills including 19 against Eastern.
- Allie Buchholz dished out 84 assists including a career-high 51 assists against Eastern.
- Vivi Vasquez recorded 55 kills in both matches while posting a career-high 40 digs against Eastern.
- Diane Pierre-Louis tied a career-high with five total blocks against Eastern while adding three more in the win over Shenandoah.
- Heifner recorded six service aces this afternoon including five against the Eagles.
