Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Roanoke in ODAC Finale

SALEM, Va. - Playing in their final Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game of the regular season, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team defeated the Roanoke College Maroons in straight sets on Tuesday night inside the Cregger Center. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Set One | 27-25 W&L
  • The Generals found themselves with a 7-2 lead in the first set as Riley Debiec and Avery Myers recorded kills and Maddie Weller recorded the matches first service ace. 
  • Roanoke regained the lead as they scored six straight points to take a 16-15 lead, Sydney Harrison and Carly Lundgren each recorded kills during the swing. 
  • After Ryanna Clark knotted the score at 25, Debiec and Grace Mitchener recorded back-to-back kills to take the first frame 27-25. 
  • Mitchener led the set with seven kills on 12 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. 
  • Allie Buchholz dished out 13 assists on 28 attempts for a .464 setting percentage. 

Set Two | 25-22 W&L
  • Roanoke's Sara Waller tied the second set at seven by finishing off a Rylee Mayer kill but the Generals used an eight point swing to take a 15-7 lead. Mitchener, Debiec and Emery Goerig each recorded kills while Mitchener added a service ace. 
  • W&L held a comfortable 23-14 lead but the Maroons stormed back to cut the lead to two as they went on a 7-0 run late in the set. 
  • Debiec finished off a Buchholz assist to give the Generals a 25-22 set two win, putting them ahead two sets to zero. 
  • Debiec recorded a set-high seven kills on 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage
  • Buchholz dished out 13 more assists while Maddie Weller dug out a team-high five attacks in the set. 

Set Three | 25-21 W&L
  • Washington and Lee used a three-point run to take an 8-6 lead early in the third set as Mitchener recorded a kill and a service ace to help the Generals take the lead. 
  • After back and forth action, the Generals used a 5-1 run to take a six point lead. Mitchener recorded two kills while Ryan Taylor finished off a Buchholz assist to put the Generals up 17-11. 
  • After the Maroons cut the lead to three, Myers and Mitchener finished off two Buchholz assists to take the third and final set 25-21. 
  • Mitchener led all players with nine kills on 18 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage while Debiec recorded five kills in the set.
  • Buchholz dished out a set-high 14 assists on 29 attempts for a .483 hitting percentage while Sydney Heifner dug out four attacks. 

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals move to 17-9 overall and 8-4 in conference play. With the win, the Blue and White moved into fourth place in the ODAC. 
  • Washington and Lee recorded 46 kills on 117 attempts with 13 errors for a .282 hitting percentage. The Generals hit a match-high .368 hitting percentage during the third and final set.
  • Despite coming out victorious, the Generals only led two of the team categories as they recorded a match-high seven service aces and six blocks. 

ROANOKE GAME NOTES
  • The Maroons fall to 14-10 on the season while dropping to 7-4 in ODAC play. With the loss, Roanoke falls to fifth in the conference with one conference match left to play. 
  • Roanoke recorded 51 kills on 128 attempts with 22 errors for a .227 hitting percentage. They posted a match-best .268 hitting percentage in the first set. 
  • The Maroons led the match in kills, assists (50), and digs (51). 

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Grace Mitchener led the match with 18 kills on 43 attempts with two errors for a .372 hitting percentage, her second best percentage this season. Riley Debiec posted a season-high .500 hitting percentage as she recorded 16 kills on 28 attempts.
  • Allie Buchholz dished out a match-high 40 assists while posting a .444 setting percentage. This marks her 15th game this season and eighth-straight game with 30 or more assists in a match. 
  • Maddie Weller dug out a match-high 12 attacks while Vivi Vasquez recorded ten digs.
  • Emery Goerig, Ryan Taylor and Diane Pierre-Louis each recorded two blocks in the win. 
  • Mitchener led the match with three service aces while Weller recorded two. 

UP NEXT
  • The Generals head to Emory, Ga. for the Emory University National Invitational on Friday. The Blue and White will take on Berea College (Ky.) at 2 p.m. on Friday.
