W&L Men's Lacrosse Runs Past Randolph-Macon, 15-6

Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Washington and Lee posted an 8-1 run across the first, second and third periods to claim a 15-6 men's lacrosse victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon in Ashland.

The Yellow Jackets (4-4, 1-1) opened a 3-2 advantage in the first 4:32 of the game, but the Generals (4-4, 2-0) settled into the contest and started their decisive run with 8:52 remaining in the first quarter on a goal by first-year attackman Hillis Burns (Louisville, Ky. / St. Xavier) off an assist from sophomore attackman Michael Ott (Savannah, Ga. / St. John's Prep).

The run continued at the 5:53 mark of the first quarter when junior midfielder Adam Lamberti (Bel Air, Md. / McDonogh) scored off a feed from senior attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum).  Junior midfielder Henry Holliday (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans) found rope just 33 seconds later for a 5-3 lead at the 5:20 mark.

R-MC temporarily stopped the bleeding with a goal by senior midfielder Jack Averna at 2:12 and W&L carried a 5-4 lead into the second quarter.

The Blue & White held the Yellow Jackets scoreless through the second period behind the play of senior goalkeeper Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison), who tallied five saves in the quarter.  On the other end, Ott, Witherell and Burns all found the net and W&L boasted an 8-4 halftime advantage.

The run continued through the first four minutes and change of the third quarter, with Witherell and Burns each adding another goal for a 10-4 lead with 10:23 left in the frame.  Each team would score twice more in the third period and W&L led 12-6 entering the final 15 minutes of play.  Three more W&L goals in the fourth provided the final margin.

W&L dominated at the Faceoff X, holding a 17-7 advantage.  R-MC held a 39-38 edge in shots and W&L won the ground ball battle, 37-29.

Holliday paced the W&L offense with three goals and one assist, while Burns scored three goals.   Witherell and Ott added two goals and one assist each.  Junior midfielders Matt Gallagher (Lynchburg, Va. / E.C. Glass) and Will Bou (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon) did much of the damage on faceoffs, with Gallagher winning 8-of-13 and Bou claiming 8-of-10.  Gallagher chipped in one goal as well.  Spagnoletti continued his impressive play in goal, registering 15 saves.

Averna led the Yellow Jackets with two goals and one assist.  First-year Gage Turner stopped 12 shots in goal.

Washington and Lee will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to fourth-ranked Christopher Newport for a 4:00 pm contest.
