WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Washington and Lee men's track and field senior
Joe O'Connor (Henrico, Va./Douglas Freeman) placed second at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship to earn All-America honors on Friday at the JDL Fast Track.
Highlights From the Meet
- O'Connor cleared his first four attempts through 4.90m (15'11.00"). He needed two tries at 4.95m (16'2.75") and three attempts at 5.00m (16'4.75").
- He then cleared the bar on his first vault at 5.05m (16'6.75") but came up short three times at 5.10m (16'8.75").
- Sophomore Ben Drummey of Southern Maine claimed the top spot at 5.05m. Like O'Connor, Drummey cleared 5.05m on his first attempt. Drummey won the tiebreaker over O'Connor to claim the national title because Drummey needed just two attempts to make it over the bar at 5.00m compared to O'Connor's three.
- This is the second indoor All-America honor for O'Connor, as he also garnered the laurel in 2020.
- This ties for the best individual finish at an Indoor NCAA Championship for a men's track and field athlete, as Ian McDonald '17 also finished second in the mile in 2015.
