LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team put up a season-high 94 points and tied for the second-most made three-pointers in a game in program history (14), downing Hollins by a 94-36 score on Wednesday.
After allowing the first four points of the game to Hollins (1-5, 0-3 ODAC), the Generals (4-2, 4-0 ODAC) got things going with six straight points, followed by a later 9-0 run in the first to take a 17-11 lead through the opening period.
The Generals outscored Hollins in all four quarters, with the second quarter featuring the largest margin (31-9). In the second, W&L opened with a 13-1 run, led by five points from first-year guard
Quinn McGuinness (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional). The frame then ended with a 13-2 stretch for the Generals, with nine points from first-year
Elka Prechel (Corvallis, Ore. / Corvallis), as W&L led, 48-20, at halftime.
In the second half, W&L limited Hollins to eight points in both quarters, while scoring 24 in the third and 22 in the second. The final margin of 58 points was the Generals' largest of the game.
Prechel led the way with 15 points on five made three pointers, while junior
Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C. / Athens Drive) tallied 13 points and three boards. Sophomore
Lauren Achter (Wyckoff, N.J. / Ramapo) rounded out the trio of Generals to reach double-figure scoring with 11 points on 3-for-4 shooting overall, in addition to five rebounds.
The Generals posted 68 rebounds on the night, including 32 on the offensive glass. It already marks the third game this season that W&L has pulled down 65 or more rebounds after having recorded just one such game in program history entering this season. The team also broke the program record for three-point attempts (45) and logged the third-most field goal attempts in a game in program history (82).
The W&L rebounders were led by senior
Kathryn Vandiver (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School), who pulled down nine, followed by eight from first-year
Mary Schleusner (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School) and seven from first-year
Sarah Zimmerman (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day).
Hollins was led on offense by Moriah Hill, who tallied eight points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor. Cabria Mutz came in next with seven points, and she also added eight rebounds and three blocks.
W&L limited Hollins to 26.0 percent (13-50) shooting overall in the game, including 13.3 percent (2-15) from long range. Of the team's 82 shot attempts, 35 found the bottom of the net for a 0.427 field goal percentage for the Blue and White. W&L also held positive margins in points off turnovers (34-6), points in the paint (32-16), second-chance points (37-3), fast break points (25-1) and bench points (64-6).
The Generals will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a 2:00 pm ODAC tip-off.
