LEXINGTON, Va. – Six first-years had a hand in one win each for the No. 21 Washington and Lee women's tennis team in its 9-0 sweep of Roanoke on Monday evening.
The Generals (4-0, 4-0 ODAC) dropped just four games total in doubles to begin the match. First-year
Lauren Long (Carmel, Ind. / Park Tudor) and junior
Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) earned an 8-3 win at the top spot, while first-year
Riho Iijima (Portland, Ore. / Westview) and senior
Becket Waters (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) moved past Lia Streibich and Vic Rios, 8-1 at No. 2.
First-year
Isabella Custard (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal) and sophomore
Meagan Donovan (Jacksonville, Fla. / The Bolles School) claimed an 8-0 win at No. 3 over Zane Maiden and Reilly Otto to complete the doubles winners.
In singles, five matches featured a W&L player losing just one game during their straight-set wins. First-years
Grace Lorenz (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Epic Charter Schools) (2),
Jordan Kach (Warrenton, Va. / Seton School) (4) and
Karolina Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) (6) each defeated their opponents by 6-1, 6-0 scores. Senior
Gracie Caplice (Richmond, Va. / St. Catherine's School) (5) matched the first-years' results with a 6-1, 6-0 win of her own, while junior
Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) (3) lost just one game to Julia Bassett.
Junior
Gabi Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) (1) rounded out the winners with a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Halle Fernstrum.
This concludes the team-play portion of W&L's fall schedule, as the Generals' next dual match will be on February 18 at home against Case Western Reserve. Carlton and Long, however, will return to action from October 13-15 in Rome, Ga., for doubles play at the ITA Cup.
