ASHLAND, Va. – The No. 11 Washington and Lee men's soccer team played on the road at Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon, and prevailed by a 3-1 score over the Yellow Jackets.
With the win, the Generals improve to 11-1-4 overall and 7-0-2 in conference play, while extending their undefeated streak to 15 games. In program history, 15 straight games without a loss marks the third longest overall undefeated run, and it is also tied for the second-longest single-season streak. The Yellow Jackets fall to 7-5-3 overall and 3-4-2 in ODAC play with the loss.
The Generals put the first goal on the board in the 22nd minute when first-year midfielder
Matteo Adler (Cobham, England / ACS Cobham International) found
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) for Bass's fifth goal of the season. The Yellow Jackets responded, however, just 14 minutes later when Zach DeShazo scored to tie the game on an assist from Kwadjo Tannor.
Despite the score being tied at the half, the Generals owned an 8-3 advantage in total shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Junior midfielder
Grant McCarty (Dallas, Texas / Parish Episcopal), who scored twice in last Saturday's win, put W&L ahead for good in the 55th minute when he scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder
Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster). It marked the third goal for McCarty this season and Agbeyegbe's third assist.
Just nine minutes later, senior defender
Charley Colby (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) put the finishing touches on the win with his first career goal in the 64th minute. His goal came off an assist from junior defender
Park Bruner (Atlanta, Ga. / Atlanta International), which counted as Bruner's fifth assist of the season.
The W&L defense clamped down on the R-MC offense in the second half as well, limiting the Yellow Jackets to just two shots over the final 45 minutes, both of which did not finish on target.
With five goals now this season, Bass is third on the team in that category and he moved up to 71 points in his career. McCarty talled his third score of the season and Bruner's fifth assist of the season is good for the second most on the team. For the game, McCarty led all players with six shots (three on goal), while Bass took three shots and put each on goal.
In goal, first-year
Will Joseph (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) (11-0-4) earned the win as he played all 90 minutes. With the R-MC goal at 35:12, Joseph's consecutive shutout minutes streak finished at 379:24, the eighth-longest streak in program history.
For the Yellow Jackets, five different players shot one time each, with DeShazo's goal going down as the only shot on goal. Zach Fontenot (2-1) suffered the loss, but he made seven saves across the 90 minutes of play.
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Guilford for a 6:00 pm kick-off. This will mark the regular season finale for the Generals, with the ODAC Tournament beginning with the quarterfinals next Saturday, October 29.
