GREENSBORO, N.C. – The seventh-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team saw its 15-game unbeaten streak come to an end in a 3-0 road loss at Guilford on Wednesday night.
With the loss, the Generals suffer just their second loss of the season and first since the season opener. W&L closes its regular season at 11-2-4 overall and 7-1-2 in the ODAC to earn the No. 2 seed for the ODAC Tournament. The Quakers close their regular season at 6-7-4 overall with the win and 4-5-1 in conference play. Guilford will be the No. 7 seed in the ODAC Tournament.
The Quakers opened the scoring in the second half, when Ryan Doyle struck for two goals in a four-minute span. Doyle scored unassisted in the in the 53rd minute, followed by another solo score in the 57th minute to put GC out to a two-goal lead.
Guilford added to its lead in the 84th minute when Osman Torres scored off an assist from Jesse Guzman. It was just the team's sixth shot of the game and their fifth on target.
The Generals opened the game with a sizeable advantage in shots (12-0) and attempts on goal (6-0), but were unable to convert. W&L finished the first half with a 13-2 shot margin and went on to outshot the Quakers, 11-4, in the second half.
Junior midfielder
Grant McCarty took a team-high six shots on the night, while sophomore midfielder
Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) put four of his five attempts on target. Junior midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) came in next with four shots and he put one try on goal.
In net, sophomore
Matt Semcesen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge) (0-1) started and played the first 58:37 of the game. He allowed two goals and made one save, before senior
Rye McMillen (Fairfax, Va. / The Heights School) played the remaining 31:23. McMillen allowed one goal and made one save.
Doyle's two goals came on his only two shots of the game, while Torres also attempted two times. In goal, Roman Robinson (6-7-4) made eight saves to record the shutout.
The final shot totals favored W&L by a 24-6 count, while corner kicks also went the way of the Generals, 13-3, after a 9-1 margin in the second half.
The Generals' next contest will come on Saturday in the ODAC Quarterfinals, when they will have a rematch against the Quakers. Kick-off time for the game is yet to be determined.
