VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced its 2021 College Division All-State Football Team on Friday and Washington and Lee had several selections, including the Coach of the Year and the Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Fourth-year Head Coach
Garrett LeRose was named the VaSID Coach of the Year after leading the Generals to an 8-3 overall record and an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship. The 2021 ODAC Coach of the Year as well, LeRose guided W&L to a 5-1 conference mark, leading the Blue & White to an NCAA Tournament berth. He is now 19-11 (.633) overall with the Generals.
First-year linebacker
Jalen Todd (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) was tabbed as the VaSID Defensive Rookie of the Year. Todd played in 10 games during his rookie campaign and finished third on the team in tackles with 55 total stops. He added 2.5 tackles for a loss (-6) and had one sack (-3). Todd also posted one pass breakup and he forced one fumble. He had two games with double-digit tackle totals, including a team-high 14 tackles (10 solo) against Mount Union in the NCAA playoffs.
W&L had three VaSID First Team selections and three more Generals were honored on the second team. Senior offensive lineman
Jared Cordova (Purcellville, Va. / Woodgrove), senior safety
Dean Johnson (Atlanta, Ga. / Marist) and junior defensive lineman
Robert Poindexter (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett) were all named to the first team, while senior running backs
Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge) and
Alex Wertz (Sterling, Va. / Dominion), and junior offensive lineman
Logan Moyer (Germantown, Md. / Quince Orchard) were all selected to the second team.
A First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-Region honoree, Cordova helped the Generals' offense rank sixth nationally in rushing with an average of 297.7 yards per game. He was also responsible for W&L allowing just two regular season sacks.
Johnson also earned First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-Region accolades in 2021. He started all 11 games at safety and was the team's fourth-leading tackler with 50 total stops. He also led the team with three interceptions and tied for the team lead with five pass breakups. Johnson completed his career with 130 tackles, 16 pass breakups, seven interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He did so in just 29 career contests.
Poindexter garnered the same laurels as Cordova and Johnson, posting First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-Region honors this past season. He started 10 games at defensive end and posted 42 total tackles and led the ODAC with 5.5 sacks (-24). His 11.5 tackles for a loss (-37) led the team and ranked third in the ODAC this year.
Breece was a First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-Region honoree as well, leading the team in rushing with 831 yards and 11 touchdowns on 165 carries. He compiled a school-record 4,541 rushing yards and was second all-time in career touchdowns (46). His 6.3 career rushing average is tied for fifth in program history.
Wertz was named to the VaSID team as a return specialist. He also earned Second Team All-ODAC honors as an all-purpose back. He played in 10 games this fall, returning 16 kickoffs for a career-high 29.9 average and one touchdown. Wertz led the team with a career-best 1,040 all-purpose yards and five total touchdowns. He carried the ball 88 times for a career-high 548 yards and four touchdowns and caught two passes for 14 yards. Wertz claims 2,908 career all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns in just 29 career games.
Moyer was a First Team All-ODAC selection this fall, combining with Cordova to help the Generals' offense rank sixth nationally in rushing with an average of 297.7 yards per game. He was also responsible for W&L allowing just two regular season sacks.
