Singleton named Coach of the Year; six Generals earn All-State laurels

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced its 2021 Men's Soccer College Division All-State teams on Wednesday, and Washington and Lee head coach Mike Singleton highlighted the honorees as the Coach of the Year.

The Generals also had six players claim All-State selections, as senior defender Jack Rawlins (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary), junior midfielders Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) and sophomore forward Adrian Zimmerman (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) all made the first team. Senior defender Seth Chapman (Williamston, Mich./Fowlerville) and first-year midfielder Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster Schools) rounded out the group with second team honors.

Singleton earns VaSID College Division Coach of the Year honors after leading the Generals to their first all-time appearance in the NCAA Semifinals. W&L posted an overall record of 18-2-2 (.864) in the fall, the second-most wins in a season and second-highest winning percentage in program history. Singleton also earned ODAC co-Coach of the Year honors, while his coaching staff was named the top staff in Region VI by the United Soccer Coaches.

Rawlins was a strong component for the Generals' back line that has yielded a 0.83 goals-against average across 22 games this season. In addition, Rawlins scored two goals on the offensive end, once each in wins over N.C. Wesleyan on September 10 and then 15th-ranked Christopher Newport on September 24.

Rawlins was named just the second First Team All-American in program history this season, and he also claimed First Team All-Region laurels for the first time and his fourth straight First Team All-ODAC citation.

In 22 starts this season, Bass was second on the team in goals (12), assists (8) and points (32). His 32 ranked third in the ODAC, while his goal total was good for fifth and his eight assists were tied for second. Bass had at least one point in 13 contests this season and multiple points in 11 games.

Bass was named Second Team All-America, First Team All-Region and First Team All-ODAC this season, as well as Academic All-District by CoSIDA and Scholar All-America by the United Soccer Coaches.

Kutsanzira logged a team- and ODAC-high 13 assists this season, which broke the program single-season record. In 22 starts, his 13 assists are also tied for the fourth-most in Division III. Kutsanzira added seven goals for a total of 27 points, and he recorded at least one point in 14 games this season, including 4-of-5 NCAA Tournament games.

Kutsanzira earned his first All-America and all-region citations this season, as well as his second All-ODAC award.

Zimmerman capped off a strong season with a historic run during W&L's NCAA Tournament games. Zimmerman tied the NCAA Division III record for goals in an NCAA Tournament game (4) and he also set Division III tournament records for goals (11) and points (22), with his point total being just one shy of tying the record for most points in a single tournament across all three divisions, including women's tournaments. In total, Zimmerman finished with 38 points on 17 goals and four assists, with his goals and points totals ranking second in the ODAC, to earn his first All-ODAC award.

Chapman finished his career with another strong season on the W&L defensive unit. With his help, the W&L defense posted eight shutouts and allowed just three shots on goal per game in 22 contests. Chapman added his second All-Region accolade this season and his third straight All-ODAC award.

Agbeyegbe appeared in all 22 games for the Generals this season, starting 20 contests, and finished fourth on the team in assists (6) and fifth in both goals (5) and points (16). Agbeyegbe recorded a point in eight games this season, with five multi-point performances, and he scored a goal in four straight games in October. Agbeyegbe was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year this season and earned a spot on the all-conference second team.
