Third-Ranked Hornets Turn Tables on W&L Men's Lax, 13-6

Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – One day after defeating Lynchburg at home, the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team suffered a 13-6 road loss to the third-ranked Hornets on Saturday evening.

Lynchburg (7-2) started the game hot, scoring three times in the opening 5:06, including a pair of goals by graduate attackman Trammel Robinson.

W&L (4-3) scored two of the next three goals to pull with 4-2 at the 5:06 mark of the first period.  Senior attackman Austin Hudson (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) got the Generals on the board with a goal off an assist from senior attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) to make it 3-1 at 8:24, but Robinson scored his third goal of the game at 6:42 to make it a 4-1 game.  Witherell responded with a goal of his own to make it 4-2.

The Hornets regained control with a 7-1 run over the next two periods to take a commanding 11-3 lead with 6:03 left in the third period.  Junior attackman Brett Rogers notched two tallies to key the Lynchburg run.

The Generals attempted to get back in the game with a three-goal spurt across the end of the third period and beginning of the fourth.  Hudson scored his second goal of the game off a feed from junior midfielder Garrett Mize (Dallas, Texas / St. Mark's) at the 2:16 mark of the third, while sophomore midfielder Henry Holliday (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans) scored his second goal of the contest, man-up from senior attackman Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) just 37 seconds into the fourth period.  Junior midfielder Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) added a goal off an assist from senior midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) with 8:01 remaining to pull W&L within 11-6.

That was as close as the Generals would get, however, as the Hornets tacked on two more scores, including another for Robinson, in posting the seven-goal victory that ended a three-game losing streak to W&L.

Lynchburg out-shot the Generals, 55-25, and the Hornets held a 44-28 advantage in ground balls.  The Red & White also won 14-of-23 faceoffs and forced 22 W&L turnovers.

A day after notching a career-best 19 saves, W&L senior goalkeeper Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) registered an 18-save effort.  Hudson and Holliday scored two goals each to lead the Generals' offense.  Witherell finished with one goal and one assist.

Robinson led Lynchburg with four goals and one assist.  Rogers tallied two goals and one assist, while graduate midfielder Colin Dean and junior attackman Kyle Lewis totaled one goal and three assists each.  Sophomore Patrick Moore recorded six saves in goal for the Hornets.

Washington and Lee will next play on April 17 at 7:00 pm at Ferrum College.   The Generals were slated to host Randolph this Wednesday, but the contest has been postponed.  A make-up date will be announced soon.
