W&L Men's Lacrosse Clipped by Hampden-Sydney, 14-12

Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Hampden-Sydney scored a pair of goals just 21 seconds apart to break a 12-12 tie and claim a 14-12 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday evening at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

The loss snapped a program-record 24-game ODAC regular-season winning streak that dates back to a 15-14 loss to Roanoke on April 22, 2017.

The Generals (3-2, 2-1) trailed 11-7 with 3:10 remaining in the third period, but out-scored the Tigers 5-1 over a span of 7:45 to pull even at 12-12 with 8:38 left.  However, W&L couldn't assume the lead and H-SC pulled ahead for good on a goal by senior attackman Jack Hayden off an assist from senior attackman Jared Medwar with 4:20 remaining.  Sophomore defenseman Nick Morgan gave the Tigers an insurance goal, scoring unassisted with 3:59 remaining.  From there, the Tiger defense clamped down and allowed the Blue & White just one shot the rest of the way.

Hampden-Sydney (5-1, 3-0) stormed out of the gates early on, holding a 4-1 lead in the opening 10:21 of the contest.  The Generals responded with a four-goal run, keyed by two tallies from junior midfielder Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) to take a 5-4 lead with 13:14 left in the second quarter.

The Tigers received a goal from senior midfielder Reilly French with 9:48 left in the first half and neither team could find the net for the remainder of the second quarter, producing a 5-5 tie heading into the intermission.

H-SC notched three straight goals in the first 4:59 of the second half for an 8-5 lead, but the Generals used goals by senior midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) and sophomore attackman Will Schnorr (Paoli, Pa. / Conestoga) to pull within a single goal (8-7) with 6:25 left in the third period.  The Tigers answered with another three-goal spurt, including two goals from Hayden, for the 11-7 lead.

Washington and Lee held a 41-38 advantage in shots and each team collected 38 ground balls.  The Generals were 21-for-21 on clears and won 16-of-30 faceoffs.

MacCowatt and senior attackman Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) totaled two goals and one assist each to lead the W&L offense.  Mulholland, Schnorr and senior attackman Austin Hudson (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) all chipped in two goals apiece.  Senior Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played all 60 minutes in goal, registering 13 saves.

Hayden and senior attackman Jake O'Brien scored four goals each for the Tigers.  Medwar finished with two goals and four assists.  Junior goalkeeper Will Perry notched 10 saves while playing the duration for H-SC.

Washington and Lee will be back in action on Friday when it hosts fifth-ranked Lynchburg for a 7:00 pm contest.
