FERRUM, Va. -- The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its 2020 All-State Wrestling team on Thursday and Washington and Lee had three wrestlers honored.
Seniors
Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) and
Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County), and sophomore
Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) were all named to the squad, which honors wrestlers from all the collegiate programs in the Commonwealth. All three were named to the second team, while
Nathan Shearer was selected as the VaSID Coach of the Year. Virginia Tech's Hunter Bolen was tabbed the VaSID Wrestler of the Year and Averett's George Moseley was named the Rookie of the Year.
Conners earned his first all-state citation after posting Third Team All-America honors during the 2020 season. He registered a 23-7 overall record and was the Centennial Conference runner-up at 165 pounds, earning honorable mention all-conference honors for a second time. Conners went on to place third in his weight class at the NCAA Southeast Regional to earn his first trip to the NCAA National Championship.

A three-time NWCA Scholar All-American, Conners completed his career tied for fourth all-time in career wins with an 80-33 (.708) overall record. He also set a program record for career 4-point near falls (38) and he finished fourth all-time in career takedowns (208).

Hallyburton was named to the all-state squad for the second year in a row after also boasting Third Team All-America this season. He finished his final campaign with a 30-3 overall record. His 30 wins represent the third-best single-season total in program history. A two-time Honorable Mention All-Centennial Conference honoree, he finished as the runner-up at the 2020 Centennial Conference Championship at 184 pounds. He then went on to win the same weight class at the NCAA Southeast Regional, his second consecutive regional title.Â

Hallyburton finished his career tied for seventh on the W&L career wins list with a 72-23 (.758) overall record. He was also a two-time NCAA Championship qualifier and two-time NWCA Scholar All-American.

A First Team All-American in 2020, Luth earned his first all-state accolade. He recorded a 24-2 overall mark during his sophomore campaign and he received First Team All-Centennial Conference honors by winning the league title at 157 pounds. Luth then went on to win the 157-pound championship at the NCAA Southeast Regional to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship, where he was the No. 7 seed overall.

A 2020 NWCA Scholar All-American, Luth has compiled a 46-5 overall record across his first two seasons.

Shearer guided the Generals to a program record for wins during the 2020 season, posting a 16-5 overall record. The former mark of 13 wins had stood since 1973. He also helped W&L claim the 2020 Centennial Conference title, the Blue & White's first conference crown since winning the ODAC Championship in 1979. Additionally, W&L placed a program-best second at the NCAA Southeast Regional.Â
Shearer just completed his ninth season in charge of the Generals, having improved the team's win total for five consecutive years. W&L notched two wins in 2015 and improved to six in 2016, eight in 2017, nine in 2018, 12 in 2019 and 16 this past season.
