Santowski Named CSC Academic All-American, Becomes Eighth Honoree in W&L Wrestling History

LEXINGTON, Va. — Washington and Lee junior John Santowski has been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Division III Academic All-America® Third Team for the 2024-25 season, the organization announced Wednesday.

The Pittsford, N.Y. native and 197-pound standout becomes the eighth wrestler in program history to earn the national Academic All-America distinction in the At-Large division and the first since Sam Campbell received First Team recognition in 2012. .   • 2011 Third Team – Sam Campbell (At-Large – Wrestling)
  • 2001 Third Team – Joshua Chamberlain (At-Large – Wrestling)
  • 1987 Honorable Mention – Steve Castle (At-Large – Wrestling)
  • 1986 First Team – Larry Anker (At-Large – Wrestling)
  • 1985 Third Team – Jeffrey Dixon (At-Large – Wrestling)
  • 1984 First Team – Tim Valliere (At-Large – Wrestling)
A two-time ODAC champion at 197 pounds, Santowski was recently named the 2024-25 ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He compiled a 27-7 overall record during the season, including seven pins, six technical falls and seven major decisions, while contributing 108.5 team points. He placed fourth at the NCAA Region IV Championships, finishing just one spot shy of qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships. He also earned First Team All-ODAC recognition for the second consecutive year.

In the classroom and the community, Santowski has established himself as one of the most accomplished student-athletes in Division III. A biology major with a minor in Poverty and Human Capability Studies, he maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA. He is a five-time W&L Scholar-Athlete, a three-time member of the President's List, and a two-time ODAC All-Academic selection. He has also been honored three times as a NWCA Academic All-American and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Santowski's leadership and service are equally notable. He serves as a small group leader with Reformed University Fellowship and as Vice President of the Chocolate Milk Society. His community engagement includes volunteering with Campus Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, Rockbridge Christmas Baskets and Care Portal, among other initiatives. He is also an Eagle Scout and conducted STEM-based research as a Summer Research Scholar in the W&L Biology Department.

Santowski's performance helped guide Washington and Lee to a 15-3 overall record and a 6-1 mark in ODAC duals during the 2024-25 campaign. The Generals claimed the ODAC Individual Championship with 156 team points and finished fourth at the NCAA Region IV Championships with 139.0 points.
