LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore forward
Stella Noels (Cambridge, Mass./Middlesex School) scored 2:40 into overtime to give the Washington and Lee field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Randolph-Macon at the W&L Turf Field on Saturday.
The teams entered the extra frame tied, 1-1, and the Generals (8-6, 5-1 ODAC) controlled the action in the extra period. With just over two minutes elapsed, W&L went on a counterattack. First-year forward
Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) dribbled the ball up the center on the offensive end of the field, and then sent a pass out to sophomore forward
Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) on the right side.
Weise entered the circle and then passed across the front of the cage to a cutting Noels on the left post. Noels quickly pushed the ball into the right side of the goal for the game-winner.
The Generals statistically dominated the game taking 27 shots compared to six for the Yellow Jackets (8-8, 3-3 ODAC) and had a 10-2 edge in penalty corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made one save, while playing the entire contest. On the other side of the field, sophomore goalkeeper Gatlin Snyder made 13 saves in 62:40.
R-MC scored the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute of the game off the stick of sophomore midfielder Katie Brookman. The Yellow Jackets held the 1-0 lead until late in the third period. With 1:16 on the clock in the third, the Generals scored off a corner.
First-year forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) had the ball on the right side and sent a pass across the circle to junior midfielder
Abigail Hancock (Darien, Conn./Darien). Hancock took one touch and then fired toward the right corner of the cage. Weise deflected the ball went through the legs of Snyder and into the cage to tie the game.
The Generals appeared to score the game's first goal with 1:54 left in the first period. Senior forward
Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) struck the ball into the goal, but after the officials conversed, they ruled a violation on Paolano and the game remained scoreless.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they play at Shenandoah at 7:00 pm.
