Three Second-Half Goals Push Generals Past Shenandoah, 5-2

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee field team scored three second-half goals to top Shenandoah, 5-2, on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field in the ODAC-opener for both teams.

The squads entered the second half knotted at 2-2. The Generals (3-5, 1-0 ODAC) broke the deadlock in the 56th minute to grab a 3-2 lead. Junior forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) pushed the ball down the field on a counterattack. Paolano flipped the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Isabella Morande, as the keeper came off her line.

A Hornet (7-3, 0-1 ODAC) defender got a stick on the ball as it bounced toward the goal, but it then deflected off first-year forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School). Weise and the defender crashed into the post, taking the goal off its line, just as the ball crossed the line. The official awarded the score to Weise, and W&L took a 3-2 advantage. It marked the first collegiate goal for Weise.

The Blue and White pushed the margin to 4-2 with 8:19 left in the contest on the first goal of the season for senior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School). Tucker dribbled the ball in to the top of the circle and fired a shot that was stopped by Morande. Tucker corralled the rebound near the left post and pushed the ball across the line in her first game of the season.

The final tally (5-2) for the Generals came just three minutes later off the stick of sophomore midfielder Abigail Hancock (Darien, Conn./Darien). From the top of the circle, Hancock sent a shot toward the cage that went through multiple defenders and into the goal. It marked the first collegiate tally for Hancock.

W&L held an 18-10 advantage in shots in the contest, while Shenandoah had a 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) stopped three shots for the Blue and White in 70 minutes, and Morande totaled six saves.

Junior defender Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) registered both of the Generals' first-half goals, which marked her first two scores of the year.  Sophomore defender Kelly Fennessy (Bel Air, Md./Roland Park Country School) assisted on Hewitt's first tally of the game. It was the first collegiate assist for Fennessy. Junior midfielder Taylor Hayes recorded both of the Hornets' goals.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Eastern Mennonite at 7:00 pm.
