W&L Men's Lacrosse Wins Fourth Straight; Downs Guilford, 20-5

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team won its fourth straight contest, defeating Guilford by a score of 20-5 on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (6-4, 4-0) had 12 different players find the goal in improving to 30-0 all-time against the Quakers (4-6, 0-4).

W&L jumped out to a 5-2 lead after one quarter of play on the strength of three goals and one assist from junior attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster).  The Generals then out-scored GC, 3-1, in the second period to carry an 8-3 lead into the intermission.

The Blue & White pulled away in the third period, scoring six goals in the quarter and holding the Quakers without a score en route to a 14-3 lead following 45 minutes of play.  Sophomore attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) did much of the damage, scoring three goals in the penultimate quarter.  Senior attackman Whit Griffin (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) added two scores and Dardani notched a pair of assists.

The Generals substituted freely in the final quarter, receiving three goals from sophomore attackman Robert Cooleen (Princeton, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) and one goal and two assists from first-year attackman Chris DuPont (Northport, N.Y. / Northport).

For the game, W&L held advantages of 64-23 on shots, 52-21 on ground balls and 20-6 on faceoffs.  The Generals were also 4-for-5 on extra-man situations.

Witherell led the way with four goals and one assist, while Dardani had three goals and three assists.  Cooleen tallied a career-best three goals and Griffin notched two goals and two helpers.  Sophomore Philip Rech (Darien, Conn. / Darien) started and posted 10 saves with three goals-allowed in 37:48 in goal.  Junior Nic Peterson (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Culver Academy) and first-year Aidan Long (Concord, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle) both played in the second half and combined for three saves.

Senior midfielder Nick Damiano paced the Quakers with three goals.  Junior goalkeeper Parker Styles played the first 54:41 of the contest and recorded 24 saves with 17 goals-allowed.  He was spelled by first-year Jack Rogers, who notched one save with three goals-allowed.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday evening, when it hosts Bridgewater for a game at 7:00 pm.
