W&L Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down VWC for a 10-3 Win

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team held Virginia Wesleyan scoreless in the second half to pull away for a 10-3 victory over the Marlins on Saturday evening at Wilson Field.

The Generals (5-2, 2-0) held a 5-3 lead at the half courtesy of goals from five different players and six saves from senior goalkeeper Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy).

Junior midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) found junior midfielder Joe Perrella (Larkspur, Calif. / Redwood), who beat VWC (6-1, 1-1) senior goalkeeper Sean Galloway (Shady Side, Md./Southern) for a 6-3 lead 3:48 into the third period.  The Generals stretched the lead to 7-3 at the 5:49 mark when senior attackman Kevin Katzmann (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster).  Dardani then hooked up with first-year attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) for a pretty behind-the-back goal that made it a five-goal contest (8-3) with 4:28 left in the penultimate quarter.

Witherell scored off an assist from senior midfielder Graeme Weaver (Newtown Square, Pa. / Malvern Prep) with 2:35 left in the quarter and Perrella scored of a Weaver feed with 2:51 left in the game to provide the final margin.

W&L held a 35-33 edge in shots and a 34-25 advantage in ground balls.  The Blue & White also won 13-of-15 faceoffs. 

Witherell scored three goals and Weaver had one goal and three assists to pace the W&L offense.  Dardani had one goal and two assists, and Perrella scored two goals.  Katzmann added one goal and one assist.  Senior defenseman Buck Armstrong (Austin, Texas / Episcopal) recorded one caused turnover, to go along with five ground balls.  Senior midfielder Jack Clarke (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Delbarton) won 12-of-14 faceoffs and scored a first-half goal.  Devine finished with 11 saves in 57:09 in goal.

First-year long-stick midfielder Tyler Conn (Seguin, Ontario/Rosseau Lake College) scored two goals to pace the Marlins.  Galloway stopped eight shots in goal.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Herndon, Va., where it will take on Colby College at 7:00 pm.
