W&L Men's Lacrosse Falls to Lynchburg in ODAC Semis

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Top-seeded Lynchburg College scored 13 straight goals en route to a 13-5 victory over fifth-seeded Washington and Lee in the semifinals of the ODAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament at Shellenberger Field on Saturday.

The Generals (12-7) opened the game strong, scoring three times in the first 3:02 of the game.  Junior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) got W&L on the board at the 13:11 mark when he rebounded his own shot and beat LC junior goalkeeper Chris Hawley.  Junior midfielder Jack Clarke (Basking Ridge, N.J./Delbarton) then fed senior long-stick midfielder Noah Lessing (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) for a goal off of the ensuing faceoff and senior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) scored off an assist from senior attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) at 11:58 for a 3-0 lead.

W&L kept the pressure on throughout the first quarter, but Hawley settled down, making six saves in the period to keep the Generals from extending the lead.

The W&L defense was terrific early, holding the Hornets (16-2) off the scoreboard until junior attackman Austin Stewart scored unassisted with 2:15 left in the first period.  However, LC began to control possession and Stewart scored again off an assist from junior attackman Aaron Murphy at the 12:27 mark of the second period.  He then scored a third straight tally at 10:20 to tie the game at 3-3.

Three different players also found the net for LC as the Hornets carried a 6-3 lead into the halftime break.

Murphy scored a pair of tallies and Stewart added another as the Lynchburg lead grew to 10-3 entering the fourth period.

Junior midfielder Dane Angell scored his second goal of the game to start the fourth quarter and the Hornets found the net two more times before W&L scored with 1:59 left as Goldman found Lewis for a goal.  Junior midfielder Andrew Riehl (Reisterstown, Md. / St. Paul's) chipped in a goal with 38 seconds left for the final margin.

Lynchburg held a 44-38 advantage in shots and 34-27 in ground balls, while the Generals won 14-of-23 faceoffs.

Lewis scored two goals and Goldman had two assists to lead the W&L offense.  Junior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) played a majority of the game (55:17) in goal and notched 12 saves with 13 goals allowed.

Stewart finished with four goals and Murphy had two goals and one assist for Lynchburg.  Hawley played the first 55:17 in goal and notched 18 saves with just the three goals allowed.

Washington and Lee has now completed the 2015 season.  Lynchburg moves onto the championship game on Sunday, when it will face either Virginia Wesleyan or Roanoke.
