Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Fifth-seeded Washington and Lee used a six-goal second quarter to post a 6-5 victory over fourth-seeded Hampden-Sydney in the quarterfinals of the ODAC men's lacrosse tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Everett Stadium.
After falling behind 1-0 following the first quarter, the Generals (12-6) got on the board just 41 seconds into the second frame when junior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) scored unassisted. Zanetis' goal ignited a goal-scoring flurry that saw W&L notch an additional four tallies before the 9:30 mark of the period.
Sophomore midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) followed at 13:11 and senior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) got in on the action with an unassisted score at 10:54. Senior long-stick midfielder Peter Schubert (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) scored unassisted 12 seconds later in transition off of the ensuing faceoff to make it 4-1 and senior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) found rope at 9:30 to cap a five-goal run.
Hampden-Sydney (8-7) ended the run with a goal by junior midfielder Jake Koferl at 4:23, but Paglia scored a second goal with 48 seconds left in the half to make it 6-2 at the break.
The Tigers controlled possession for much of the second half and scored two third period goals to make it a 6-4 game heading into the final period. Koferl made it 6-3 with a goal off an assist from first-year midfielder Hunter Brown at 9:44 and junior midfielder Abbot Wallenborn scored man-up at 5:54 to pull H-SC within two goals.
W&L managed just seven shots across the final 30 minutes of play, including only two in the fourth quarter. The Tigers took advantage, pulling to within 6-5 with 7:47 left when Koferl found senior attackman James Hughes. However, the Generals were able to force key turnovers down the stretch, holding on for the win.
The Blue & White held a 30-23 advantage in shots and a 33-19 edge in ground balls. Hampden-Sydney won eight of the 15 faceoffs.
Paglia led the offense with two goals, while junior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) notched three saves in 60 minutes of action between the pipes.
Koferl logged two goals and one assist, while Hughes had one goal and one assist for the Tigers. Sophomore Connor Hinson and senior David Noftzinger both played in goal for H-SC, combining for five saves.
W&L advances to the ODAC semifinals where it will face top-seeded Lynchburg College on its home field. The game time is still to be determined.
