Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior attackman Austin Stewart (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored seven goals and assisted on another to lead fifth-ranked Lynchburg to a 15-6 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday at Wilson Field.
With the score tied 1-1 early in the first period, the Hornets (7-2, 3-0) went on a five-goal run to post a 6-1 lead with 13:18 left in the second period. Stewart scored three goals in the first quarter, while junior attackman Aaron Murphy (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) scored one goal and notched two assists during the same stretch.
W&L (7-5, 2-2) received goals from senior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) and junior midfielder Graeme Weaver (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep) in the second quarter as Lynchburg carried a 7-3 lead into the break.
Stewart scored for the Hornets and Weaver tallied a second goal for W&L to start the third period, but LC followed with a six-goal surge to stretch its lead to 14-4 in cruising to the win.
Lynchburg held a 40-35 edge in shots and a 30-28 advantage in ground balls. Each team won 12 faceoffs.
W&L was led offensively by Weaver and junior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset), who scored two goals each. Junior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) played the first 42:20 in goal and recorded eight saves with 11 goals allowed. Senior Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) played the final 17:40 and made four saves with four goals allowed.
Stewart's effort was flanked by three goals and three assists from Murphy. Senior attackman Todd Galvin (Whitman, Mass./Boston College High) chipped in two goals. Junior Chris Hawley (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) played the initial 57:05 in goal and made seven saves with five goals allowed.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Shenandoah for a 2:00 pm contest.
