F&M Knocks Off W&L Men's Lacrosse, 7-6

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Franklin & Marshall scored four of the game's final five goals, including a pair of scores in the fourth quarter, to post a 7-6 win over 11th-ranked Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse on Saturday at Wilson Field.

Neither team led by more than two goals and the Generals (3-2) opened with a 2-0 lead following scores by senior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Durham Academy) and junior midfielder Max Hutson (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) in the first 5:12 of the game.

The Diplomats (2-1) responded with a three-goal spurt to take a 3-2 lead with 13:29 remaining in the first half.  Senior midfielder Chad Gamble (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored man-up from junior attackman Michael Bossidy (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) at 2:33 of the first quarter and Bossidy scored from Gamble with 45 seconds left in the first period to tie it at 2-2.  Gamble then scored unassisted for the lead.

W&L retaliated with a three-goal run of its own, starting with an unassisted goal by senior attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y. / Loomis Chaffee) at the 9:38 mark of the second quarter.  Goldman then fed senior attackman Alex Owen (Westwood, Mass./Noble and Greenough) for a score off the ensuing faceoff at 9:30, and senior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) found rope at 7:16 for a 5-3 lead.

Just like the end of the first period, F&M scored in the final minute to grab the momentum back.  This time senior midfielder Ben Ross (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) scored off an assist from Bossidy with 40 seconds remaining to make it 5-4 W&L at the half.

Senior attackman Will Ballantyne (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) got the game-ending run started for the Diplomats when he scored off yet another assist from Bossidy at the 10:30 mark to make it 5-5.  However, sophomore midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) gave the Generals the lead back (6-5) when he scored from a Goldman helper with 1:22 left in the third quarter.

Bossidy knotted the game at 6-6 with 9:19 left in the fourth period when he scored off a Ballantyne feed and Gamble scored the game-winner unassisted just 1:34 later.

For the game, F&M held advantages of 38-26 in shots and 30-26 in ground balls.  The Generals took 11-of-17 faceoffs.

The loss overshadowed a stellar game by junior goalkeeper Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy), who recorded a career-best 17 saves in 60 minutes of action.  Goldman notched one goal and two assists to lead the offense.  Lewis added one goal and one assist as well.  Junior defenseman Buck Armstrong (Austin, Texas/Episcopal) produced another strong effort with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Gamble scored three goals and assisted on another to lead F&M.  Bossidy had two goals and three assists and Ballantyne chipped in one goal and one assist.  Senior Timothy Mattessich (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded nine saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Mary Washington for a 7:00 pm contest.
