Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Hampden-Sydney senior attackman Mike Funk scored off an assist from junior midfielder Abbot Wallenborn with 37 seconds left in overtime to lift Hampden-Sydney to a 7-6 victory over 15th-ranked Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday at Hellmuth Field.
The Generals (7-4, 2-1) carried a 5-3 lead into the halftime break after senior attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) scored an unassisted tally with six seconds left in the second period.
The Tigers (5-4, 3-1) scored the only goal of the third period as Funk found rope off an assist from senior midfielder Thomas Armstrong to make it 5-4. H-SC then knotted the game at 5-5 with 12:28 left in the fourth quarter as senior midfielder Fleet Jernigan scored unassisted.
W&L notched its lone goal of the second half as senior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) scored to grab the lead back (6-5) at the 11:40 mark. However, the Tigers knotted the score with 6:10 left when Funk found senior attackman James Hughes for the equalizer.
Washington and Lee could not overcome 23 turnovers in the contest. The Generals were out-shot, 29-21, and H-SC carried a 28-23 advantage on ground balls.
Lewis and junior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) led the Blue & White with two goals each. Junior goalkeeper Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) once again turned in a solid performance, making 13 saves.
Funk led the Tigers with two goals and one assist. Armstrong added one goal and two helpers. Senior David Noftzinger posted four saves in goal.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts eighth-ranked Lynchburg for a 7:00 pm contest.
