Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team limited Sewanee to just one goal in each half in posting a 7-2 victory over the Tigers on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.
W&L (6-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest. Senior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Durham Academy) opened things with an unassisted score at the 13:26 mark and first-year midfielder Bobby Doyle (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) won the ensuing faceoff and fed senior attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) for a goal just nine seconds later.
Sewanee (4-2) scored its only goal of the first half at the 10:59 mark of the first quarter when sophomore attackman George Bukawyn (Short Hills, N.J./Groton School) scored off an assist from first-year attackman Ronnie Berndt (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy).
However, the Generals held the Tigers scoreless for the remainder of the half, receiving two more first-period scores and a second goal from Lewis in the second quarter for a 5-1 lead at the intermission.
Junior midfielder Max Hutson (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) scored his second goal of the game as the lone tally in the third period and the Generals carried a 6-1 lead into the final quarter.
Junior attackman Chris Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored at the 9:58 mark for a 7-1 lead and Berndt finally scored a second goal for Sewanee with 7:37 remaining for the final margin.
The Generals' defense was stellar all evening behind another tremendous performance from junior goalkeeper Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy). Devine posted 11 saves, including four in the fourth period, to spearhead the W&L defensive effort. The Blue & White also forced 23 turnovers on the play of junior Buck Armstrong (Austin, Texas/Episcopal) and senior Colin Fraser (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade). Armstrong had four caused turnovers and Fraser posted three.
On offense, Lewis and Huston scored two goals each, while Doyle had one assst, to go along with seven faceoff wins in nine chances.
Berndt paced the Tigers with one goal and one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Selby Austin (Rossville, Tenn./Memphis University School) notched 14 saves in 60 minutes between the pipes.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Bridgewater for a 1:00 pm contest. The game will be played at the W&L Turf Field.
