Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team opened a 6-0 lead and cruised to a 14-4 win over Randolph on Saturday at Wilson Field.

The win was the 150th in the career of Head Coach Gene McCabe.  McCabe is now 150-70 (.682) in 14 seasons as the head coach at W&L and Hamilton.

Despite jumping out to the six-goal lead, the Generals (5-2, 1-0) started slow, waiting until the 2:41 mark of the first period before junior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) broke the seal with a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day).

Junior attackman Kevin Katzmann (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) scored man-up from Zanetis with 27 seconds left in the first period and then Katzmann assisted on a goal by senior attackman Alex Owen (Westwood, Mass./Noble and Greenough) 16 seconds later for a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Senior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Durham Academy) scored unassisted 1:31 into the second period and junior midfielder Max Hutson (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) followed suit at 11:55 for a 5-0 lead.  Henry capped the six-goal run to start things with an unassisted tally at the 11:00 mark.

Randolph (2-2, 0-1) ended the second quarter with three straight goals to make it a 6-3 game at the halftime break.  Junior attackman Andrew Risse (Annandale, Va./Annandale) scored the first man-up at the 5:57 mark, and junior attackman Andrew Gleitz (Plymouth, Ind./Culver Military) and sophomore attackman Shane Soghomonian (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) each found the net over the next four minutes and change.

W&L received five third-quarter goals from five different players to create some distance from the WildCats.  Owen and Zanetis each scored once and assisted on another goal during the period.

Randolph scored 54 seconds into the final frame, but W&L finished with the final three goals for the 10-goal margin.

W&L held a 39-21 advantage in shots, a 43-22 edge in ground balls and won 16-of-21 faceoffs in the contest.  The Generals were led offensively by Katzmann and Zanetis, who totaled four points each.  Katzmann tallied three goals and one assist, while Zanetis had two goals and two assists.  Owen posted two goals and one assist and Lewis had two scores.

Junior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) saw 49:22 in goal and turned away five shots with four goals allowed.  First-year Nic Peterson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Culver Academy) played the final 10:38 and made one save.

Soghomonian led the WildCats with one goal and one assist.  Junior Cam Davis (Gibsonville, N.C./Western Alamance) played the first three quarters in goal for Randolph, making eight saves with 11 goals allowed.  First-year Matt Lindenbaum (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) notched two saves in the final 15:00.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Sewanee for a 7:00 pm contest.
