W&L Men's Lacrosse Flies to a 14-5 Win Over Mary Washington

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back in claiming a 14-5 victory over Mary Washington on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.

Senior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Durham Academy) got things started just 1:45 into the contest when he scored unassisted.  First-year midfielder Drew Ross (Cranford, N.J./St. Joseph) won the ensuing faceoff and scored eight seconds later to give the Generals (4-2) a 2-0 lead. 

Sophomore midfielder Joe Perrella (Larkspur, Calif./Redwood) and senior attackman Alex Owen (Westwood, Mass./Noble and Greenough) also scored unassisted in the game-opening flurry that gave W&L a 4-0 lead at the 8:16 mark of the first period.

Mary Washington (2-2) got on the board at the 7:10 mark of the opening quarter when senior attackman Jack Bondurant (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) scored man-up off an assist from senior attackman Greg Smith (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison).  W&L junior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) ended the first period scoring when he found rope off a feed from Lewis with 22 seconds left for a 5-1 lead.

The Eagles scored a pair of goals to start the second quarter to make it a 5-3 game with 8:51 left before the break.  However, the Generals closed the first half with two goals of their own for a 7-3 lead at the intermission.

Zanetis and Lewis both scored in the third quarter as the lead swelled to 9-3, before the Eagles got one back from sophomore midfielder Jack Carver (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) with 19 seconds left in the quarter.

Lewis scored two more goals and sophomore midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) added two of his own just 36 seconds apart as the Generals pulled away for the comfortable margin.

W&L held advantages of 44-27 in shots, 34-26 in ground balls and 14-9 in faceoffs.

Lewis paced the W&L offense with four goals and one assist, while Zanetis scored three goals.  Henry scored two goals and Perrella added one goal and one assist.  Junior defenseman Buck Armstrong (Austin, Texas/Episcopal) collected a team-high six ground balls, caused two turnovers and assisted on one goal.  Junior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) played the opening 58:31 in goal and recorded 10 saves with five goals allowed.  First-year Nic Peterson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Culver Academy) played the final 1:29 and made one save.

Bondurant led the Eagles with three goals and one assist.  Sophomore attackman Miles Davis (Earlysville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) chipped in one goal and one assist.  Junior Pete Shammas (Apex, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) started in goal and allowed five goals with one save in 15 minutes.  First-year Colin Bressan (Charlottesville, Va./ St. Anne's-Belfield) played the final three quarters and posted 14 saves with nine goals allowed. 

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Randolph for a 3:00 pm contest.
