W&L Men's Lacrosse Runs Past Washington College, 15-7

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Joe Perrella (Larkspur, Calif. / Redwood) notched a career-high five goals and one assist, and junior goalkeeper Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) posted a career-best 14 saves to lift the 14th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 15-7 victory over fourth-ranked Washington College on Saturday at Kirby Stadium.

The Generals (3-1) scored three goals in the opening 4:51 of the game on the strength of one goal and one assist from junior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) to post a 3-0 lead at the 10:09 mark.  However, the Shoremen (0-2) scored four of the game's next five goals to tie the game at 4-4 entering the second quarter.

W&L used a second three-goal run courtesy of two goals from Perrella and one from senior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Durham Academy) to push out to a 7-4 lead with 4:47 left before the break.  Washington scored two goals in a span of 16 seconds to cut it to 7-6, but senior attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y. / Loomis Chaffee) found the net off a feed from Zanetis with 35 seconds left and the Blue & White carried an 8-6 lead into the intermission.

The Generals owned the third period, scoring four goals while holding the Shoremen off the board to surge out to a 12-6 advantage.  Zanetis notched one goal and two assists during the run, while Perrella scored his fourth goal of the contest.

Washington opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a goal by junior midfielder Sid Looney at the 11:53 mark, but W&L scored the final three tallies for the eight-goal final margin.

Washington College held a 42-40 edge in shots, but the Generals led in ground balls (40-28) and faceoffs (14-10).

Perrella's career day was supplemented by a career-high seven points (2 G, 5 A) from Zanetis and three goals and two assists from Lewis.  First-year midfielder Bobby Doyle (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown East) won 10-of-16 faceoffs and junior defenseman Buck Armstrong (Austin, Texas / Episcopal) registered three ground balls and two caused turnovers.  Devine played all 60 minutes in goal.

Looney paced the Shoremen with three goals and one assist.  Senior Andrew Bolland started in goal and posted five saves with 11 goals allowed in 36:52 in goal.  He was spelled by sophomore Jackson Szurley, who tallied four saves with four goals allowed in 23:08.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts 20th-ranked Franklin & Marshall for a 2:00 pm contest.
