Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Christopher Newport used a five-goal run across the first and second periods to produce a 13-9 victory over 15th-ranked Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse on Friday evening at Wilson Field.
With the score tied 1-1 late in the first period, the Captains (1-0) seized the lead with 52 second left on a goal by junior attackman Alex Barber (Fairfax, Va./Robinson). CNU then struck again before the end of the period when junior midfielder Dave Magdeburger (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) scored unassisted with eight seconds remaining.
The run continued just 59 seconds into the second period as senior attackman John Thompson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored off a feed from junior midfielder Joey Rolando (Baltimore, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) at 14:01 and sophomore attackman Brooks Billings (Street, Md./North Harford) made it a 5-1 game when he found rope from Barber at the 11:24 mark. First-year attackman Matthew Crist (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) capped the run when he scored from Magdeburger at 9:10 for a 6-1 lead.
W&L (0-1) closed the first half with a pair of man-up goals to cut it to a 6-3 game at the intermission. Junior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) scored off a feed from senior attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) at the 2:54 mark and Dabir scored unassisted with 54 seconds left before the break.
CNU responded with three straight tallies to start the third quarter to open a 9-3 advantage. However, the Generals retaliated with three of their own to cut it to 9-6 entering the fourth quarter. Dabir scored his third goal of the game at 6:14 and sophomore midfielder Joe Perrella (Larkspur, Calif./Redwood) scored twice in a span of 46 seconds.
The Captains again opened a quarter with a set of goals as Thompson and Billings both found the goal in the first 3:39 of the fourth quarter, but W&L scored a pair itself to remain within striking distance at 11-8 with 9:53 left. However, the Generals could get no closer and CNU claimed its first-ever victory over the Generals in its fourth chance.
For the game, W&L held a 36-35 edge in shots and a 38-35 lead in ground balls. The Generals also won 16 out of 25 faceoffs but could not overcome 28 turnovers. Dabir led the way with four goals and one assist to move up three spots on the school's career scoring list. His 160 career points are now tied with Pope Hackney '01 for 13th on the all-time list. Perrella had two goals and senior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) finished with a pair of assists. Senior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) chipped in one goal and one helper. Junior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded 11 saves.
Thompson led the Captains with five goals, while Billings posted two goals and two assists. Rolando added one goal and three assists. Sophomore Matt Hayden (McLean, Va./Madison) saw all 60 minutes between the pipes, posting nine saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts the College of Wooster for a 4:00 pm contest.
